but this book is wonderful so far

Am still reading, to be honest, but this book is wonderful so far! At last I have caught up, as this is the latest in the mind expanding Explorer Race series. It is hard to describe Robert's books, but they are jam packed with incredible information, that will knock your socks off in all likelihood! Hear from one of the thirteen...who are the thirteen? Well, it IS called Totality and Beyond, so be prepared for an interesting (to say the least!) ride :)

Where did Life…or better said Existence started?

This is the grand finale of the Explorer Race saga. It is supposed to be book 20 of the series but was the last one to be written and published...and what an ending to the greatest adventure of spiritual exploration.

For the Explorer Race readers, the biggest picture of the totality I had in mind was the three hundred Loves Creation, with the ‘universe’ of its creators being a greater mass than all the Loves combined.

The book starts with one of the thirteen, meaning one of the thirteen personalities that made up a being called Sojoooo. He explains that each personality has its own life and pursues its own interests but at some point, whenever they were closer to each other they would all ‘feel’ a need and had a vision. The vision was a ‘World within worlds’ with Creation creating from the outside in. So after ‘some time’ of feeling this need and having this vision they decided to do something about it and manifested “the first world” which would then keep recreating and ever expanding itself from the outside in…until there would be a point in creation, at the very center of the totality, in which a catalytic element would trigger a reverse way of creating from the inside out…and guess where is that very center and who is there in training to become the one who is going to reverse the process of creation??

When Sojoooo is asked to give an idea of the size of the totality he said that taking as a reference the 300 LovesCreation, combined with the vast universe of its creators it would be about the same relation of what a cell is to a human body -meaning trillions of times bigger than that…and any body who has read up to book nine of the Explorer Race may agree that our massive local universe with its billions of galaxies, in relation to the Love Creation it is in, may also be about the same relation of a cell to human body…to have a vague idea of magnitude.

So far in the book Sojoooo dosen’t know about his origin or who or what created him and it isn’t until about the end of the book that the first Sssnnnnn, one of two individual personalities speaks. He explains that they are located beyond the totality and both have always been and that they are the beginning of all that has ever been or will ever be, and that there is nothing or no one beyond them…they are the end, or the beginning of the rainbow. He says that there are two Sssnnnns and that they are waiting for a third Sssnnnn to arrive that isn’t there yet.
He explains that they have tremendous capacities and abilities but they lack motivation, they are full and complete unto themselves and wish for nothing, but after a loooong experiential period of ‘time’ –which did not existed then- they felt the precursor of a need and decided to act and thus they emanated Existence and Pre-existence, and nothing else. Long after that they emanated two beings Soooosh first and then Sojoooo.
So the need and the vision experienced by sojoooo was coming from Existence wanting to experience itself in the form of creation.

Sooosh is the only one who has always been aware of the Sssnnnns and it seems that one of his ‘jobs’ is to oversee the training and preparation of the third Sssnnnn that is taking place within the totality…and guess who is the third Sssnnnn in training???

When the second Sssnnnn speaks he talks about the time when the third Sssnnnn arrives to where they are and how they, the first and second Sssnnnn, with their tremendous capacities and abilities combined with the vast experience and tremendous motivation of the third Sssnnnn (who will be guided by Sooosh from the center of Totality, once the training is completed, and throughout the entire Totality, gathering experience in creationism along the way) will open up the gates for entire new ways and possibilities of creating…and more.

I hope I have not spoiled in this brief summary, some of the new revelations given in this amazing last book of the Explorer Race series.

Not For Every Audience

Obviously a number of reviewers have been helped by this book. It contains a lot of valuable information, including often-overlooked points such as evaluating and adapting to teachers' varying styles.

That said, I agreed with the reviewer who pointed out that most students who can navigate this book and "read and reread it many times" as the author recommends don't really need a book of this sort. Those who cannot do so may find this book no easier to comprehend than their school assignments. On page 70, for example, the author gives this suggestion:

"As you read, think of ways to organize the material to help your mind absorb it."

That one skill alone takes many students years to master. He follows this suggestion with:

"I always liked diagrams with single words and short phrases connected with arrows to show cause-and-effect relationships."

Again, a student who understands cause-and-effect relationships and can visualize the kind of diagram the author describes is already ahead of the game. Those who can't won't be helped by this suggestion.

The book uses a linear format of most of the suggestions given. Details and charts are given for creating task sheets, charting one's use of time, making a schedule, or writing an outline. But there are no instructions or illustrations for the use of graphic organizers, for example, which are helpful for visual learners in understanding text or plotting a writing assignment. Many more visual examples could have been provided that would make the text more useful. Struggling learners need information presented in more than one modality. Color would help. Not overly-busy, which is also problematic, but something to relieve the many pages of dense black and white and text, give visual clues to help readers find information quickly.

The book's index is not comprehensive enough. While reading, I came across several subtopics I wanted to go back to, but could not find in the index.

The author states that this book is for high school students, middle school students, "traditional" college students, parents of students of any age, and "nontraditional" students. Writing one book to fit the needs of each of these audiences would be a tall order. And indeed, as I peruse the book with each of these target groups in mind, there is much that any one of them would need to wade through or skip over. That is an unnecessary burden for someone who is already struggling with study skills; each of these groups deserves a book that is targeted toward their needs. The average middle schooler preparing for high school would find this book inaccessible.

In all, this book contains a lot of good information, but in a format that is less than user-friendly, and should be divided into several separate books and revised to meet the needs of learners of different ages and abilities.

Best Study BooK Ever!

I first fell in love with this book about 15 years ago when I started my undergraduate program. I don't remember which edition it was back then (probably the first) but it made a difference in my study habits. As a PhD student, mother, and wife, I felt that it would be essential to improve my study habits as I am returning to school. This author has a real insight into the lives of real students. He offer practical ways of how to study by identifying who you are and what you need to do for you. I think this is a must have for any student...traditional or non-traditional. If you want to learn how to study, this is the way to do it.

great for students of any age

I have a teenager that I am trying to get "in the groove" of studying. The breezy, "tell it like it is" approach to schoolwork is refreshing and encouraging for the struggling student. Too often, kids think the difference between "smart kids", "average kids" and "dumb kids" is a product of "inborn talent" or smart parents. The real difference between students is HOW they Study. This book tells you how to become an excellent student.

I am returning to college for some post graduate work and find the tips very worthwhile. I am getting straight A's. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

"Sandberg and Wendel's German for Reading certainly deserves publication in this revised and corrected edition, for the following reasons: Organization: German for Reading takes the approach of quickly showing language in context, concentrating on decoding meaning from available clues, and giving a large number of examples to illustrate the variations available. It does not dwell on discussions of grammatical forms, and avoids confusing terminology. The learning topics in the chapters are grouped from simpler to more complex (and less frequent) structures, giving students a smooth and less frustrating learning curve. Exercises: The exercise examples are filled with quick hints and further directions to help explain specific language usage and exceptions. I have often found reading textbooks have far too few exercises to work with; here we have a format for self-learning, a range of simple and complex examples, and the luxury of plenitude to choose from. Reading examples: In classes where current materials are used students often complain that they are not getting the chance to work with familiar names that they associate with German history and culture. This is hands down one of the best German self-course books that there is. In barely one hour, you'll be reading (fluently) passages that some students need a year for.

An amazing book, enough said. Now buy it!

Good for someone like me working independently!

I like the way they displayed the German sentences with the English translations one line down on the left. Very good idea!!! Gave me a chance to "guess" the meaning and get immediate feedback. Would have given it five stars if the latest spelling was used so I could see the two forms and if ALL the bold-typed words were in the back glossary. If I go back to look at this material in a year I will need a complete list. I've been writing in the words for me but there's not enough room to keep them in alphabetical order. Believe it or not, language is all about words, words, words. Thus, books should be written for the learners NOT for the writers or typists.

Definitely the best option for self-study.

As a bit of a background, I have worked through the first part of the first edition of this book, and am now working through this second edition independently as a refresher.

First the negatives:

Books teaching English speakers to read German have a hard gig and also tend to be very expensive. Although I initially bulked at the thought of paying this much for essentially an update to a 40 year old book, it's at the lower end of the options. I was surprised that the work wasn't updated to take the spelling reforms into account (cf p xii). Personally, it doesn't bother me as many of the works I'll need to read in German were published pre-1998 anyway. The reasoning in the preface for the lack of change does sound a bit like 'it was too much work to change it' though.

As a slight negative, I am only at the end of chapter 4 (p55), but I have already come across a few times in the lines where explanations are repeated, or not given until the third use of a grammatical construction. Also, maddeningly, I have already found one typo in the reading passage on p54, which is annoying because there is no English to correct against to show up the printing error.

As for the positives:

The great strength of this book (and its French and German siblings) is the sheer amount of examples and repetition that you have to do. Yes, this can make sitting in a classroom just going through line by line pure death, but it's perfect for independent study. By reading so much text, you get into the discipline of not just learning declensions but interacting with German as a whole language. An added bonus are times when slight grammatical changes are made between lines which allow for understanding of various constructions.

Immediate feedback has been shown to be a key to good learning technique, and this is where the book shines. Of course, you have to be honest with yourself...

Overall, I can't give it 5 stars because of the small negatives above. It is, however, the best book out there for someone trying to teach themselves to read German or to supplement a graduate course in reading if the teaching is not up to scratch. And to be honest, you're not going to find any much cheaper either.
