Terrific story, characters and setting
By Books B Me
This is the first novel I've read by an Australian author. Once I realized that, and, what seemed like spelling 'errors' actually weren't, I quickly fell right into the world the author has so skillfully created. I had heard news stories of the massive bush fires Australia experiences, but the author brings it to life with such engrossing detail that at one point I realized I was holding my breath so as not to breath the smoke. But as good as the author is at bringing scenes to life, her ability to create a community populated by characters with real depth, and caring for each other, was what made this book really rise well above most books and shine for me.
One is first introduced to a successful man who doesn't want to return to the summer home where he spent many happy years as a child but who hasn't returned to in many decades preferring to go to boarding and summer school instead. Why? As the well plotted story unfolds and he becomes reacquainted with old friends who introduce him to new residents he is torn between wanting to return home as quickly as possible to flea some terrible memory which still cause him nightmares and wanting to stay to help save the beach community that held so many good memories as well. Staying to help wins out because of the wonderful, truly interesting people that call it home now. He is drawn into their warmth, their caring and love for each other - something very lacking in his own life. But as an 'outsider', he realizes there is a side to the community which seems no one is all that willing to share with him. Again, why? Yet, as he gets to know these people better, he begins to see his own parents, who continued to go every summer, through their eyes and his appreciation and understanding of his parents grows. But so does his guilt, his fears. Again, why? What happened so many years ago. Then something happens that makes him face the past and his fears head on to help someone in the here and now. I really couldn't put it down.
This book is filled not only with a mystery but detailed and believable action and adventure as well as characters one wants to know so very much more about after the end. I do hope the author writes many more books about this wonderful community and the very interesting characters who populate it.

Australian Mystery/Thriller with Heart and Humor
By Cathryne M. Spencer
This novel is rich in characters, clearly delineated, yet intertwined in ways that become apparent as the story unfolds. The setting is equally important, as it enriches, challenges, and even threatens those who occupy this beautiful, powerful piece of Australia. The strength of the land and its partners, the ocean and the weather, permeates this fine book, demanding that the characters recognise its power and place in their lives. As the residents of the cove, new and old, teach each other lessons and support each other, they struggle to survive by learning to "act in hope" as they try to live and flourish. And, importantly, often with humor, unforced and with a light touch.
Our fragility as well as our power are explored with moving effectiveness. It moved at a pace that made me look for a quiet, invisible corner to settle for the day and finish without interruption. It is an example of a pace that speeds and then slows, rhythmically pulling forward with excitement, then inviting a stop to ponder and savor a moment, an idea.
There is fire, there is flood, there is murder and mystery, but always there are the people and their contributions to the plot, the setting, and each other, unpredictable and oh-so-human as they are.
At the end, this is a book that gives us a chance to look at ourselves, each other, and our own small part of the world with awe, new understanding, and hope.

Redemption Down Under
By Nowra97
I met Anna and her husband in the late 1990s while living in Australia, and it is no surprise to me after all the years that have since passed she has written such a good story. Her intelligence is on clear display in these pages.
On the surface, this is a story of a small coastal town in Australia that struggles for decades with the death of a child, and a man that returns to the place where he spent holidays with his parents. But a more fundamental underpinning of the story in my view is the juxtaposition of good and evil. One of the themes is the complexity of the human condition, capable of great acts of compassion and mercy, yet also of harboring the darkness of unspeakable atrocities. There is also a theme of faith journeys that endure despite doubt and uncertainty, as the town priest, Father Brian, reveals in several passages throughout the story.
This is an enjoyable read, and a particularly impressive one given it is the author's inaugural foray into the literary world. I truly hope she will add me to the cheering throng at the Bistro, wherever that may be, because we all certainly have something to cheer about in this book.
