About the Author
Jason Shen is a Product Manager at Etsy, a global marketplace for people to make, sell, and buy unique goods.

He previously cofounded Ridejoy, a venture-backed transportation startup, and served as a Presidential Innovation Fellow, working with the White House and the Smithsonian to bring innovation to the federal government. He publishes regularly to his blog, The Art of Ass-Kicking, on business, technology, and fitness. His work has appeared in The New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, Vanity Fair, the San Francisco Chronicle, TechCrunch, Lifehacker, APM's Marketplace, and Outside Magazine.

A glorified blog post - but a worthy one.

Clocking in at 10,000 words, this ebook is really just a meaty blog post. But it'd be one of those blog posts that gets linked to for years, that helps crystallize an individual's path in life, or just provide that extra push required to move you forward. From dozens of stellar quotes and anecdotes on ambition to the Latin version of 'Go Hard', Jason spells out what has worked for him personally along with novel case studies that fill out all end of the spectrum.

A great way to mentally reinvigorate yourself, get inspired, or just read about other ambitious upstarts out there.

An Effective, Actionable, and Concise guide

Simply put, this primer is an effective guide towards understanding your wants, to actionably approaching and acquiring them.

Shen's writing style is concise and potent, neither patronizing nor trite. He makes sure to establish a consistent framework for identifying your wants, as well as compiling the many scenarios they may appear.

Some of the most powerful and useful components of the primer are in its assessment of seemingly intuitive tips. Shen reviews simple techniques such as check lists and progress tracking, but reframes them in ways specific to achieving our wants. His section on "Going After Your Wants" also provides a very useful step-by-step / decision-tree rubric, with many helpful professional and famous anecdotes.

Overall, found it to be an immensely helpful assessment and guide, and would highly recommend.

Short and powerful

This is the kind of book that can help you reframe your thinking - and kickstart your goals into reality. Jason's book is concise, thought provoking, and refreshingly free of cliches. Each section reviews a core idea, covering common pitfalls and how to get past them. Even though I've read oh, about a million books in the self-development genre, I found plenty of gems in here that had me scribbling notes and resolving to make changes. Jason helped me reframe a vague 'want' so that I thought of it as a fun project I could get done now, rather than a scary thing I'd probably never get around to. For that, I'm very grateful. Great job!

Beginning with an overview of attachment and intersubjectivity―the twin theories from which he forms his treatment plan―Hughes carefully outlines, chapter by chapter, the core principles and strategies of his family-based approach. He elaborates on the need to develop and maintain PACE (playfulness, acceptance, curiosity, and empathy)―the central therapeutic stance of attachment-focused family therapy―and supplies tips and sample dialogues for implementing this position. The importance of fostering affective/reflective (a/r) dialogue is covered in detail, as well as helping families to manage shame, understand and embrace the break-and-repair cycle of their interactions, and explore and resolve childhood trauma. Also discussed are the more procedural issues of how to incorporate parents into therapeutic conversations, when and how to question them on their own attachment histories, and how to “be” with children.

Grounded in the fundamental principle of parents facilitating the healthy emotional development of their children, Attachment-Focused Family Therapy is the first book of its kind to offer therapists a complete manual for using attachment therapy with families. Extensive case studies, vignettes, and sample dialogues throughout clearly demonstrate how Hughes’s model plays out in the therapy room. Good Clinical Resource on Family Intervention

Increasingly, there is a trend away from individual approaches to child therapy to focus more on the family. This is especially true in the treatment of children with disrupted attachment patterns, as is common with foster and adopted kids, for example. Drawing upon theory, clinical experience, and case examples, Hughes emphasizes that intervention with families should be playful, curious, and empathic. Hughes also emphasizes the importance of the therapist 'resonating' with what is happening in the treatment.

Many of the concepts and approaches discussed in this book are familiar to those of us who work with foster and adopted children and their families. If you are new to these concepts, this book will broaden your understanding, but it requires a shift in mindset and approach from that of typical child psychology.

This book demonstrates how Dan Hughes has evolved his style over the years. An extremely compassionate and skilled healer, he writes with simplicity and clarity to share the theory behind his work as well as the specific skills to replicate it (Though it isn't easy!!). Dan's work can applied in therapy with all populations, and is a must read in working with parents and children.

A professional in early childhood education, sociology, family life education, and parent education for more than 35 years, she has two master’s degrees and a Ph.D. in sociological foundations of education. Eugenia has been active in many professional organizations, including the Association for Childhood Education International, the National Association for the Education of Young Children (life member), and the National Council for the Social Studies. She served on the board for the National Association of Early Childhood Teacher Educators, the Colorado Association for Childhood Education, the Colorado Association for the Education of Young Children, and was president of the Rocky Mountain Council on Family Relations. After finishing her doctorate at the University of Denver, she became a faculty member at Metropolitan State College. She retired in December 1997 and is now professor emerita of education.

 

Mari Riojas-Cortez, Ph.D. is Chair and Professor in the Department of Interdisciplinary Learning and Teaching at the University of Texas at San Antonio. She received her Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction with an emphasis in bilingual education and early childhood education from the University of Texas at Austin. Her interest in family involvement began when she was a bilingual prekindergarten teacher at a public school district in San Antonio. Families were always very involved in her classroom in different ways and the influence on their children was noted in the way children excelled in school. Dr. Cortez realized early in her career that the success of young children came from families, even those who faced many challenges as long as they invested time working with them. Dr. Cortez research expertise includes Latino family involvement, children’s play in school settings, and classroom ecology. Dr. Cortez has published in major early childhood journals including Young Children, International Journal of Early Childhood, Early Childhood Education Journal, Advances in Early Education and Day Care, and Journal of Early Childhood Teacher Education, among others. Currently, she is the editor for Dimensions a journal of the Southern Early Childhood Association (SECA).

Only Swick's Book Is Better.

This book has everything from parent involvement to parent teacher conferencing to the very best history of parent education/involvement that I have EVER seen.

If you can't find any book by Kevin Swick, then get this one. Heck! Get 'em both! You can never do with enough ways to get parents involved with children during the early years.

A great step toward solid partnerships!

This book is comprehensive and easy to follow. It is useful for understanding the various perspectives of both teachers and families. I think it is essential for new teachers, as well as those who may feel the need to prioritize and start putting families and communication first!

needed this for a class

I bought this book for a class and thought it would be one that would be relevant to my work with parents. There is only so much that can be said and then there is repetition or information that is far from necessary. I was assigned chapter 10, "working with parents of children with disabilities". Of the 42 pages 26 talked about the history and laws of special education. There was not really anything useful in the chapter that gave specific advise on working with parents. Some of the other chapters were child abuse and home schooling. Not at all what I expected.

Great info regarding the practice and history of Yoga.
