Designed to replace the expensive Thompson SMG, the M3 was issued to airborne troops thanks to its compact design with sliding wire stock, also being favored by armored crews right up to 1991's Operation Desert Storm.

Leroy Thompson has trained special-operations units around the world on the tactical use of firearms, written over 45 books, and appeared as a weapons expert on Discovery, National Geographic, and the BBC. He lives in St. Louis, Missouri.
Adam Hook has illustrated Osprey books on subjects ranging from the Aztecs to the Chinese Army. He lives in the UK.

The right weapon for the right situation...

The M3 submachine gun, popularly known as the "Grease Gun", was designed to be a cheap alternative to the more popular but more expensive to manufacture Thompson submachine gun. It was meant to be used by airborne troops, tankers and truck drivers who might find a full-size rifle to be inconvenient. Initial skepticism over its design and capabilities eventually turned into widespread acceptance. The M3 had a long service life, from the Second World War to Operation Desert Storm.
"The M3 Grease Gun" is an Osprey Weapon Series book, authored by Leroy Thompson, with illustrations by Adam Hook. The first third of the book is devoted to the long developmental history of the M3. Another third discusses its fielding and gradual acceptance by a variety of users. It found many uses in combat, and the author provides some interesting examples, along with a fascinating comparison with its World War II rivals, such as the British Sten and Sterling submachine guns. The author brings considerable hands-on expertise to this subject. The text is nicely supplemented by period and modern photographs and a few illustrations. Strongly recommended as an introduction to the topic.
