John Doyle Klier (1944-2007) was latterly Sidney and Elizabeth Corob Professor of Modern Jewish History in the Hebrew and Jewish Studies Department at University College London. His previous publications, Russia Gathers Her Jews (1985) and Imperial Russia's Jewish Question (1995), are standard works in modern Russian-Jewish history, along with Pogroms: Anti-Jewish Violence in Modern Russian History (co-editor, 1992).

Encyclopedic Detail on Russian Pogroms. Conspiracies Rejected. Blame-Christianity Myth Rejected

This work examines the pogroms in tsarist Russia, and does so from various angles. Author John Doyle Klier includes a map of the pogrom occurrences, as well as a catalogue of archival descriptions of many of the events. He strongly rejects conspiracy theories that blame the pogroms on the tsarist Russian government and its supposed attempts to scapegoat the Jews for Russia's problems. He analyzes the pogroms in terms of the reactions of local friends and foes of the Jews, evaluates the government commissions that studied the pogroms, and comments on international reactions to the pogroms. Finally, the author places the pogroms in the broader context of the place of Jews in Russian society.

Klier warns against exaggerating the pogroms. He quips, (quote) Yet when applied indiscriminately to events in Eastern Europe, the term can be misleading, the more so when it implies that "pogroms" were regular events in the region and that they always shared common features. In fact, outbreaks of mass violence against Jews were extraordinary events, not a regular feature of East European life. (unquote). (p. 58).

POGROMS NOT DRIVEN BY CHRISTIANITY

A few of the pogroms in Russia were associated with the desecration of Jewish religious symbols. In other cases, the synagogues were the only Jewish buildings spared. (pp. 69-70).

Pointedly, author Klier categorically rejects popular attempts to blame hostility towards Jews on traditional Christian teachings about Jews. He comments, (quote) It has not been difficult to fit the pogroms into the context of Russian religious prejudice and fanaticism, the much-invoked "traditional Russian religious anti-Semitism". This was a common assessment by Jewish publicists who could decry the pogroms as a medieval atavism, destined to soon disappear as human progress advanced in Russia. Available evidence suggests that religious considerations did not figure prominently as a trigger for pogroms. In particular, the model of peasants emerging from the Russian Orthodox Paschal service intent on settling scores with the "Christ-killing Jews" is nowhere to be found in any pogrom report. (unquote). (p. 68).

It is manifestly incorrect to suppose that the Church encouraged anti-Semitism as a means of solidifying its hold on the masses. Klier writes, (quote) Almost without exception, Russian Orthodox clergy intervened to defuse pogrom situations, sometimes at risk to their own person. The clergy were ordered by the Holy Synod to preach anti-pogrom sermons, and a number of Russian Orthodox clergy were given medals and commendations for their efforts to prevent pogroms. (unquote). (p. 68).

Nor does the common association of Christian holidays with pogroms imply a religious-based cause-effect relationship. Klier writes, (quote) When violence flared up, it was invariably within the alcohol-fueled, carnivalesque atmosphere of Bright Week, far removed from the pious religiosity that was the Paschal ideal...Thus, religious celebrations provided not so much the cause as the occasion for anti-Jewish violence...There were additional reasons why pogroms tended to occur during religious festival periods: They were coterminous with fairs, market days, and hiring fairs which brought large crowds of Jews and non-Jews together and provided ample occasion for fights and squabbles. In the charged, post-regicide conditions of 1881-1882, fights possessed a higher potential to escalate into more serious forms of violence. (unquote). (p. 68, 70. See also p. 18).

Although not written in this context, John Doyle Klier's perceptive comments serve as a broad-based corrective to the anti-Christian (and anti-Polish) tendencies found in much contemporary Holocaust-related thinking. A notable recent example of the latter is neo-Stalinist Jan T. Gross, who regularly attacks Polish Catholicism in terms of Polish conduct towards Jews.

THE JEWISH TAVERNKEEPER

Which issues involving Jews were specifically Jewish, and which were not? The role of the Jews in the alcohol trade (PROPINACJA) deserves mention. One quoted exculpatory premise stated that the nationality of the tavern owner did not matter, as alcoholism was a common Russian problem even in Jewish-free areas of the Russian Empire. Contrary to this, Klier remarks, (quote) The Vilna [Wilno, Vilnius] commission prepared the most detailed and critical report on the Jewish tavern trade. The report consciously refuted the most common line of defense of Jewish spokesmen, the use of statistics to prove that alcohol abuse was greater outside the Pale. (unquote). (p. 190). [The reader should also appreciate the diffusion of cultural trends, in space and time. If widespread use (and misuse) of alcohol, among many groups of Slavs, developed under the considerable influence of Jewish tavernkeepers, then one should expect this "culture" of alcoholic consumption to diffuse to Slavic-inhabited locations that have no Jews, and even to continue when there were no more Jewish innkeepers.]

RUSSIAN-JEWISH AND EVENTUAL POLISH-JEWISH RELATIONS

Klier delves into the role of Jews in Russian society, and focuses on the efforts to improve Jewish-gentile relations. Various perspectives are presented. For example, one article in a Russian newspaper in 1881 rejected the supposition that Jewish assimilation, and the granting of full legal rights to the Jews, would reconcile Jews and the goyim. Instead, it pointed to the vast size of the Jewish population, facilitated in part by a high Jewish birthrate, and the Jewish talent in trade and commerce, one that the economically underdeveloped Russian countryside could not accommodate. Only mass Jewish emigration, to places such as the USA, could solve the Jewish problem. (p. 148).

In a similar vein, liberal newspapers complained about the compulsory settling of Jews in the Pale, and how the resulting overcrowding forced Jews to exploit and devour others through competition in crafts and petty trade, and to engage in other objectionable behaviors. (p. 144). [This massive overcrowding of Jews in the western part of the Russian Empire, and the resulting problems, were later inherited by the resurrected Polish state (1918-1939), and only ended by the Nazi German-made Holocaust (1941-1945).]

Nail biting suspense!

What is the cure for a damaged hero who is also handsome, super sexy, and oh so alpha? Well, according to author, Cindy Gerard, the answer is quite simple: a good woman. Hokey? Perhaps, but hey people this is romantic fiction, and Ms. Gerard's theory always provides a great adventure, and I love tagging along!

Directly after Carrie Granger arrived in the third-world country that she traveled to in order to help set up a dialysis program, she disappeared without a trace. Her childhood friend and high school sweetheart, Wyatt Savage (from Gerard's Risk No Secrets) is worried sick. He calls his buddy David Cavanaugh, CAV, to find her--quickly! And find her he does--as a slave laborer in the mountains surrounded by thick jungles under the guard of brutal captors who are mining rubies.

CAV pulls every string he's got to infiltrate the mining camp as a greedy American investor, but can he pull-off this op alone? More importantly, can he get around his own demons of alcoholism to return Carrie home safely? Oh yeah, and one more thing--he falls in love with her--isn't it all complicated enough?

Cindy Gerard knows how to write a romance filled with nail-biting suspense. I loved every moment of delicious trepidation that Gerard so masterfully weaved into this story. I loved her Black Ops series and was delighted when she revisited it to provide this wonderful novella. Thank you Ms. Gerard!

This is a short story that manages to be a complete story despite it's length-or lack thereof. I really enjoyed the H/H and the chemistry they had. The heroine was tough and determined and a survivor. The hero was a burned out CIA guy who does the right thing by our heroine and rescues her. Complete with a requisite happy ending after pages of breathtaking action and suspense, this one is short, sweet and amazingly complete.

Book #7, actually a novella

My first complaint is, this really could've been a full-length book. My 2nd is, we didn't really get to know either of these people very well in previous books(they were both only briefly in one other book each), and it was hard to know to get to know them in this short amount of time. I think with a longer book, I would've definitely given it 4 stars. As it stands though, with how short it was, the progression of Cav and Carrie's relationship was unsettling vs hot and steamy. I mean really? She's beaten and starved with bruises and sores and they're all over each other that quick? There's the usual angst (his) and the typical political corruption plot. Also, it's not necessary to read this one to follow the next (and last) book. The BOI's are very briefly in this one, but you wouldn't have needed to read the other 6 books to follow anything in this one. Bottom line: at 99 cents or free I'd say go for it. But at $2 I'd say skip it.

A Sincere Review (this is not for fluff)

Ethel Herr's book is the most inspiring instructional book I have ever read - on any subject.

Within just a few pages, she somehow becomes personally involved in the reader's development as a writer. Her overview on "What is a Christian Writer" really does go to the heart of writing as an art form, what it means to be a writer, and understanding the impact of your work. Most of all, I appreciate the integrity of her work and the simplicity with which she writes. She emphasizes that a writer's craft must be developed with a heart for truth and sincerity as well, no matter what you write; and that you must take responsibility for what you produce.

I've gotten more out of a few sections of her book than I did taking a writer's course. It is something to be experienced, not merely read.

A clever technique teaching Vastu

This was my first book on Vastu Sastra. At first it was hard to understand it and the author repeats himself over and over again. But as the book progresses, more and more new vastu tools are introduced together with continuously repeating the most important stuff. The result of reading this book was that I clearly understood the basic principles of vastu and learn less important but still relevant details of this science.

At first it was annoying to read repetitive information but towards the end of the book I understood that this repetition is very beneficial for the reader. The author does so so that you would get the basis right, and then learn some other stuff too. So the author (actually there are two authors) is brilliant, yet at first you think he knows nothing how to teach.

The book will teach you about the proper layout of your garden as well as the home. External layout is more important than the internal one. Vastu sastra applies to India mainly, because it's closely related with the amount of sun this country gets.

If you want to get a good general understanding of this Indian Feng Shui science, I recommend getting this book.

Behind every game is a little truth

To have your boss catch you vamping in your slutty clothes, playing pretend bad girl in a latex dress and hooker shoes? That's what happens to Vanessa. Mr. Taylor comes in unannounced, catching her enacting her secret and kinky femme fatale fantasies.

Mr. Taylor is her boss and a family friend. He also helps pay for her schooling. And he's old enough to be her father. After he sees Vanessa in her fantasy clothes, Mr. Taylor marches her upstairs and turns her into a real bad girl, on her childhood bed surrounded by girlish pillows and stuffed animals. EM can really set a scene. All that bad against all that innocence. His imagery always gets me. And I might have made it sound worse because she's not a little girl. She's in grad school so she's definitely old enough. It's just this idea that she feels like a girl, not yet the sexual woman she wants to be, and this imagery magnifies that feeling.

This first scene is so hot. To see Vanessa's timid hope and fear that this is really happening, that a man is about to use her as she has always fantasized one would, is agonizing but arousing. Some readers might be upset by this coercion, because he does steamroll her, and she does say no. But as EM puts it: "she was aware of how weak and silly her words sounded. Her body was doing things far truer than anything that was coming out of her mouth, and even she didn't believe her excuses anymore." This is Vanessa's ultimate fantasy- to be taken and used by a man who will not take no for an answer. If you are a fan of capture, forced sex, or coercion, you will enjoy this story.

Mr. Taylor takes Vanessa's inexperience and indecision and forces her to see what she really is deep down, all the dark desire, all the rough kinks. He pushes her into the role of sex goddess and beautiful wh***, stopping her from merely playacting the part. As she begins to live it, Vanessa realizes just how alike she and Mr. Taylor really are and that he knows her better than she knows herself. From that moment he caught her in her kitchen, playing and pretending, he recognized the truth about her. By the end of the story, Vanessa sees that she is who she is, and that is all she can be.

Elliot Mabeuse gets me right from the start everytime. This story gives me the older man/younger woman taboo, bad-girl fantasy, and the BDSM element. All of it is delicious. For me personally, it's not quite up there with A Good Student (which is completely awesome) or The Experiment, but it's still a great story, so well-written and so erotic.

Vanessa a mechanical engineering student has a secret fetish for dressing up in trashy hooker attire while fantasizing about being a femme fatale no man can resist. Her ultimate fantasy is to drive men wild until they loose control and use her sexually. Her boss Mr. Taylor walks in on one of her make believe sessions and witness a side of Vanessa he never dreamed was there. Secretly he has lusted after Vanessa but never acted upon his feelings due to her naivety and his friendship with her mother. Once the cat is out the bag there is no turning back as Mr. Taylor steam rolled Vanessa into a highly charged relationship with lots of kink. He will fulfill all her fantasizes and some of his own as they embark on a sexual journey that will both excite and terrify Vanessa and enslave Mr Taylor to Vanessa's newly found sexuality.

EM is a master of writing sexy stories about older men using younger women to fulfill their sexual fantasies like no other author can. The women are no shrinking violets, sometimes they are caught in situations beyond their control or willing and able to recognize their sexual needs and with a little push go after what they need to be sexual satisfied. I enjoy reading these stories from the man's POV. Something about a man loosing control over a woman to the point where he's got to have it or else is very stimulating. I really enjoyed this book but what annoyed me beyond belief was Vanessa. She may have been a college student but a 5th grader would have seen and avoided the trap she fell into. She was not naive she was DUMB. I thought her being naive was over done, at times I felt Mr Taylor needed to keep her on a leash just so she wouldn't harm herself. Another annoying moment was the amount of time she was not with Mr Taylor. I understand why it was done but I became impatient and wanted Mr Taylor back in the picture. The chemistry between Taylor and Vanessa is explosive and I loved how their sexual needs feed off each other. I give A Game of Dress Up a 3.5 rating.

Was very steamy but not much meat besides that.

This was a very steamy novel but didn't offer much more in way of meat to the plot. Although I love a steamy erotic romance I personally prefer a plot that keeps me on the edge of my seat invested and this just wasn't that kind of read, for me, in fact I sat the Book down and came back to it a few times before finally finishing the Book. Again, it is hot, hot, hot in the steamy department but lacking beyond that point.
