Middle School social studies

I wish this assessment program had lesson tests and quizzes. The performance assessments with rubric are wonderful. I paid too much and the test require a lot of critical thinking.

Sterling story telling!

North Carolina's native son Will Ferrell has written a historical novel--"The Secrets of Sterling Shearin" --which should not remain a secret!

Sterling Shearin was a real person who lived in North Carolina in the late 1780s and `90s, and Ferrell uses the fictional journal of Sterling--a young man who aspires to be more than just a farmer, and who believes wholly in the freedom of individuals, even as he holds and uses slaves--to tell this story of a man not so different from most of us, perhaps: a person of contradictions and convictions, a person who never stops trying to do what he thinks best for his family, his community, and his country.

Many of the challenges that Sterling faces--with the exception of slavery--are the same sorts of issues, intrigues, and entanglements that Americans are facing today: the proper role of government and how to finance it, the rights of the individual versus the state, the duplicity of politicians, the fighting within and among political factions, and--perhaps most interesting--the sorts of frailties, insecurities, and dilemmas we each must often deal with as we decide on what the proper course of action is in our own lives, both public and private.

"The Secrets of Sterling Shearin" is a story that entertains, enlightens, educates, enthralls--and sometimes titillates--and Ferrell tells it by adroitly using the language of that time. That language is sometimes quaint, often beautiful, occasionally surprising, and--after taking only a page or two to become accustomed to--it is always compelling.

Couldn't put this book down! Excellent find!

I simply couldn't put this book down! Loved it! The book gave an excellent description of how people lived back in the late 1700's. Of course their main purpose back then was to exist, get married & raise a family to help, build a place to live in and if they were farmers (as they were in this book) live off the land. No hospitals, doctors or medicine. I shed a few tears. This book takes you there. You live it!

Sterling Shearin is chocked full of history. It has been a long time since American History lessons. I still want to go back and read the book again and take notes to help me remember all the history facts again. This book is timely. We Americans have a lot going on right now with regards to the very documents that began our country long ago.

Secrets Revealed

Once I read the first page of this book, I was hooked on reading the next and the next . . . until the book was completed. The narrative is written in the speech and word patterns of the period, adding to its authenticity. It is a must read for a increased understanding of what life was like at this time in history.

The diary kept by Sterling Shearin from l787 to 1800 provides a graphic description of his private life and thoughts as well as his public life. His private life includes his hopes, fears, worries, finances, and sexuality. His public life introduces us to the early history of this geographic area as well as the uncertainty of the post-Revolutionary War country; this includes war, slavery, poverty, taxation, family, and religion.

Characters and events in this historical fiction include both real and imagined. This reviewer grew up in the vicinity of the narrative (Warrenton, NC) and found several of his ancestors in the story.

Scorpions - The stinging reality

Scorpions, a book about a gang. Very true to life. It really makes you think about the society today. Drive-by shootings, drugs, sexual harrassment, mostly by gangs. In this book, it really makes you think about these gangs and the dangers of being involved with them. That's what happened to Jamal, isn't it? This is a very sad story about a poor family who is just kind of having to eke out on the edge. Jamal's brother is in jail, and he wants Jamal to take over his gang. The problem is, the whole gang's whacko. This story is very well-written, and you can actually feel Jamal's fear and his sadness. This book is excellent, and I reccomend it to anyone who likes read.

Breaking Away

Gangs, violence, guns, drugs, and poverty are just some of the topics that other sugar-coated books steer clear of. Walter Dean Myers, however, is a risk-taker and isn't afraid to expose the public to these subjects.
In the well-written book Scorpions, Myers breaks away from the everyday children's books. He writes about a young boy from Harlem, Jamal.
When Jamal's brother Randy goes to jail, Jamal has to take his place as the leader of the gang Scorpions. He thinks it is a bad idea. In my opinion, Myers successfully intertwined the worlds of violence and gangs. Jamal, the innocent bystander, and Indian, a fellow gang member, battle for position of head Scorpion. It is Indian's rough personality that Jamal is intimidated by.
I enjoyed this book a lot. The book reminds me of how people fight in my school and I could relate. As I was reading the book, I felt supportive of Jamal and the decisions he needed to make. I would recommend this book to anyone who is looking for a refreshing change of perspectives. Anyone can relate to this book.

Scorpions Tim Roat Per. 3 4/30/01 My book is called the Scorpions, a book written by Walter Dean Meyers 1988. Its about a 13 year old boy named Jamal, who's older brother went to jail for murder. He was the leader of the gang called the scorpions. Since his older brother is locked up, his right hand man Mack is trying to get his little brother Jamal to run the gang. So he decides to do it so he can get the money to bail his brother out of jail. There is a lot of strong points in this book, such as, Jamal pulling a gun on one of his class mates in school, his brother gets stabbed while in jail, and one of Jamal's fellow gang members is trying to kill him. Personally I thought this was a really good book and I HATE to read. Everything is understandable, its not like other books where every other word you don't understand. So if your looking for a good easy book to read, I would suggest Scorpions.

I confess. Peta Tait has referenced my research in prior publications. So, I shouldn't be surprised how obtuse and uber-intellectual this work is. I haven't plowed through the whole thing yet, but am not entirely sure I'm happy with the conclusions she uses my work to support. Strictly for academic types who have lots of time to contemplate the abstract.

I skipped straight to the level three test and my wife used this book as her starting place. I reviewed it briefly and it was worth it's money. That said, I still would encourage new learners to start with writing in Chinese characters instead of being allowed to substitute pinyin. For this reason, I gave it three stars. I don't think there should be six levels to the HSK. Instead I think there should be four. One would allow pinyin but have half off for it if used, the second would be the equivalent to level four, third to level five, and six would be the forth.

Exceeds HSK 2 Scope

The vocabulary included in these simulated exams greatly exceeds the scope of HSK2. Though it is good to have tests slightly above the level of the actual exam in order to practice, in this book there are lots of words not included in the HSK2 official lists, therefore it is not more difficult but different scope.
