I absolutely loved this series

I absolutely loved this series. I don't know why I waited so long to read it but Aden Lowe is such an amazing author that after reading his MC series I had to move own to this one, and boy am I glad I did. The entire series is wonderful and it was so nice to see some of the brothers from the MC series, even if I did read it out of sequence. This is a wonderful read, a mixture of cowboys and MC bikers, danger, romance and some very hot sex scenes. If you haven't read this series yet, I would highly recommend it to anyone and everyone.

Captured was a good story. It closed up Jakob and Kate's story. Falon and Rita alittle as while. Kellan and his Hell Raiders are wide open to Lowe to make the MC into a series. If you read Big Game and Hunted then you have to read Captured to get the ending. Happy Reading

An Amazing Ending to The Hunted Love Series!!

Where do I even start? Ok, I'm not going to recap the book because you can find the synopsis above. That being said, Captured: Hunted Love #3 was phenomenal! I loved Big Game: HL#1 and Bounty: HL #2 and Captured was a pound of icing on a really delicious cake!

Usually when I read a book with more than two POVs I notice some things. The characters either all use the same vocabulary, and have similar personalities or they are very one dimensional and the book gets confusing, making me dislike the book and really consider reading any of the author's work. Well, having read Big Game and Bounty, I was eagerly awaiting Captured. Big Game had been written from two POVs and Bounty from three. Each flowing seamlessly, not the least bit confusing and written with such detail, I couldn't help but connect to each of the characters. Imagine my surprise when I realized Captured was written from FIVE POVs. It took me a while to realize it because having been familiar with all of the characters, I was immediately sucked into the story. I don't mean a great book that I loved, I mean being in the middle of the story, feeling everything the characters felt, whether it was confusion, anger, love, lust, heartbreak, sadness, fear, all of it!

Another thing I loved about Captured is the blending of two worlds. Western Romance and MC. the author did a phenomenal job telling the story from both genres and they blended seamlessly. I am amazed. That is all I can really say! I wasn't a fan of Western Romance because I can't relate. I'm a city girl who has had no experience or knowledge of what it takes to run a working ranch, so reading about it didn't really interest me......until I started this series. In a way, I'm a little sad that this series has reached its conclusion. The guys are so hot! Even the antagonist! The sex was tasteful but still white hot!! The pure love between the characters was beautiful and 'watching' how the heroes protected their women was amazing. Giving me a view on true love and desire.

I wish I could give Captured more than the five stars that's allowed because the way this book is written is sheer brilliance. I've never seen anything like it!! I'm really looking forward to whatever the author releases next!!

A culmination of exhaustive research in three distinct areas: primary source documents from American archives, North Vietnamese publications containing primary and secondary source material, and dozens of articles and numerous interviews with key South Vietnamese participants, this book represents one of the largest Vietnamese translation projects ever accomplished, including almost one hundred rarely or never seen before North Vietnamese unit histories, battle studies, and memoirs. Most important, to celebrate the 30th Anniversary of South Vietnam’s conquest, the leaders in Hanoi released several compendiums of formerly highly classified cables and memorandum between the Politburo and its military commanders in the south. This treasure trove of primary source materials provides the most complete insight into North Vietnamese decision-making ever complied. While South Vietnamese deliberations remain less clear, enough material exists to provide a decent overview.

Ultimately, whatever errors occurred on the American and South Vietnamese side, the simple fact remains that the country was conquered by a North Vietnamese military invasion despite written pledges by Hanoi’s leadership against such action. Hanoi’s momentous choice to destroy the Paris Peace Accords and militarily end the war sent a generation of South Vietnamese into exile, and exacerbated a societal trauma in America over our long Vietnam involvement that reverberates to this day. How that transpired deserves deeper scrutiny.

George J. Veith, a former Army captain, has written extensively on the Vietnam War and POWs/MIAs. He is most recently the author of Leave No Man Behind: Bill Bell and the Search for American POW/MIAs from the Vietnam War (2004). He has presented papers at major conferences, including the May 2008 conference in Paris on “War, Diplomacy, and Public Opinion: The Paris Peace Talks on Vietnam and the End of the Vietnam War (1968-1975).” He testified twice on the POW/MIA issue before the Congress.

An accurate account on the heroic efforts of the South Vietnamese in the last days

Black April is a book about the fall of South Vietnam in 1975. The book has 18 chapters, each titled by a quote, and an introduction. The book tells the story of South Vietnam in the last two years (1973-1975) of the Vietnam War, starting with the signing of the Paris Peace Accords and ending with the final collapse of South Vietnam on April 30, 1975.

The story is told from a military viewpoint. Those with other interests (e.g., political, social) may be easily turned off with detailed military maneuvers, troop movements, strategies, etc. However, the author skillfully intertwines war scenes with anecdotes of the human spirit, poignant and touching.

For those who are interested in military history, or just history in general, this book is a must-read. The chapters are full of detailed and vivid descriptions with maps and accounts of what happened during the last few months of the war. The author presents the material from a fairly objective position, using sources from all sides, including communist sources, in printed materials, memoirs, articles, etc. In addition to superb narrative, the author also provides valuable insights and analysis on what, how, and why things happened the way they did.

The collapse of South Vietnam started with the Paris Peace Accords in 1973 when Nixon pressed South Vietnam President Thieu into signing the agreement by promising harsh reaction to violations of the Peace Accords by the Communists (Chapter 1). Nixon's promise to Thieu was kept secret from Congress. However, it is doubtful that things would have been different had Congress known about it.

As expected, the Communists didn't sign the Peace Accords in good faith. It was merely a trick to allow the Americans to complete the face-saving withdrawal from Vietnam. Le Duan, the North Vietnam leader at the time and a die-hard Marxist, wanted to conquer South Vietnam. He persuaded the Politburo to push forward "revolutionary violence" in a military conquest of the South (Chapter 2).

South Vietnam desperately needed military aid from the U.S. to prepare for the defense. But Congress voted to reduce the aid amount. While South Vietnam prepared for the renewed war, North Vietnam poured supplies down the Ho Chi Minh trail and sent fresh troops to the South (Chapter 3). "[O]ne hundred thousand fresh troops advanced southward in 1973, and another eighty thousand were headed to the battlefields during the first half of 1974." (p. 69)

The war resumed in South Vietnam when Gerald Ford became U.S. President (Chapter 4). "Ford faced a recalcitrant Congress and a stagnant economy," (p. 81) and couldn't do much.

The beginning of the end started with the collapse of Phuoc Long in January 1975 (Chapter 5). "Heavy rains swept Saigon, unusual for January." Colonel Le Gro's Vietnamese driver, eyeing the pouring rain, said to him, "Even the gods weep for Phuoc Long." (p. 110)

Chapters 6 through 16 chronicles the collapse of Corp I and Corp II, from Ban Me Thuot (Chapters 6-7), Thieu's error in his order of withdrawal (Chapter 8), the retreat from the highlands (Chapter 9), to the chaos and disintegration (Chapter 10), Hue and Corp I collapse (Chapters 11-12), the battle for the coastal cities (Chapter 13), the Communist advance toward Saigon (Chapter 14), the battle for Phan Rang and its capture by the Communists (Chapter 15-16).

The battle of Xuan Loc is the most heroic battle of the war (Chapter 17). Against all odds and clearly outnumbered, under the magnificent command of Brigadier General Le Minh Dao, the men of the 18th Infantry Division, the 82nd ranger battalion, the 1st Airborne Brigade, the Air Force, the 3rd Armored, and the popular and regional forces fought with remarkable courage and skill.

Only when President Duong Van Minh broadcast the surrender order on April 30, 1975, the South Vietnamese soldiers laid down their weapons (Chapter 18). They followed the order of their supreme commander against their own wish to continue fighting. Even when surrendering, they maintained their honor and discipline. In the most moving scene on the final day, the 81st Airborne Rangers surrendered to their enemy with class. "Shouldering their weapons,lining up four abreast in a column stretching almost half a mile long, the two thousand men of ARVN's most elite unit began marching along the highway toward Saigon. As promised, Colonel Huan was in the first row. . . Soon a Communist officer and troops met Huan on the highway. Huan told the officer his men were prepared to turn over their weapons, but they would not undress. If ordered to do so, they would refuse, and a firefight would break out. The Communist officer relented, and the soldiers of the 81st stacked their arms and dispersed. It was the final unit in Saigon to lay down its weapons." (p. 494-495). Several South Vietnamese Generals committed suicide. "[M]ost mid- and upper-level commanders stayed with their men. For example, not one Ranger-group or battalion commander deserted his men. Of the senior officers who escaped at the end, Lieutenant Generals Truong and Thi, for example, were no longer commanding units." (p. 495)

Black April is an accurate account on the heroic efforts of the men of the South Vietnamese Armed Forces who stood up for a last fight against the aggressive North Vietnamese despite lack of ammunition, supplies, equipment, and replacements. They fought till the end. The very end.

A Vietnamese saying says, "Heroes die, but their heroic spirit never dies." (Anh hung tu, khi hung bat tu.) The country of South Vietnam died, but the spirit of the Vietnamese people never dies.

Black April is about the military defeat of South Vietnam. But the stories in Black April are not just about the fight against communist invasion. They are about the human spirit. They are about the spirit of the Vietnamese people, the peace loving people, who were not given the chance they deserved to fight for freedom.

Finnalya balanced book about the final years of the VN War

With George J Veith's "Black April" we finally, a book that tells a more complete tales about the final years of the Viet Nam War and make used of the latest de-classified documents from all sides to give the readers a more complete understanding of the end of the Vietnam War. Unlike many previous American "historians" who blamed the South Vietnamese for the lost of the Vietnam war. Black April shows that the drastic cut in military aids to South Vietnam for fiscal year 1974 to 1975 combines with some critical mistakes made by the South Vietnamese was the blame for the outcome of "Black April" 1975.

I have several family members who were directly involved in some of the events described in this book. One of my brothers was a First Lieutenant with medical staff of the ARVN 2nd Field Hospital in Kontum and was with the rear guard unit fighting at Cung Son. Another brother, Truong Pham was a First Lieutenant with the 52nd Regiment/18th Division. My brothers' discussions of events such as the withdraws from the Highland and the battle of Xuan Loc pretty much corporate Veith description of these events.

Thanks to Mr. Veith for telling the tales that is long overdue.

Rewarding

I left Vietnam in '68 after two and a half years working with the Vietnamese. This book let me know that those of us were there earlier left some well traind soldiers to cartry on the battles.

About the Author

Steven Heim currently holds the position of Associate Professor of Computer Science in the Computer Science/Management Engineering Department of the College of Information and Computer Science at the C.W. Post campus of Long Island University. He is Director of Graduate Programs for the department and Co-Director of the CICS Usability Lab. Dr. Heim lectures on subjects such as Human-Computer Interaction, Interaction Design and Web Development on the undergraduate and graduate levels.

 

His research and scholarly interests include topics such as accessibility and computer-based musical composition and performance as well as HCI and Interaction Design. He draws from an extensive background in interface development and interactive multimedia including audio application, interactive animation and digital video. Dr. Heim's background in music and computer programming affords a unique prospective in the field of HCI and interface development. His approach to the learning environment is based on a deep understanding of the educational process gained through years of teaching experience.

Textbook for an HCI class I took. The author appears to enjoy listening to himself talk, and cite sources of other people. It's a difficult read because of the author's chosen style and sentence structure.

A good first look into HCI

My instructor used this as the textbook for an intro to HCI class a year ago. It gives a great overview of terminology and what questions you should be asking yourself.

I never purchased this book, since I lived a few minutes away from the library which allowed members to check it out for reading in-library. If you have access to a library which has this on reference, I'd probably recommend skimming through it.

That being said, I don't think it would be a waste of money to purchase this book. I find myself looking up the titles in this book's table-of-contents whenever I'm working on some kind of user-facing hardware or software interface, as a reminder of the things I should be aware of. It would probably be nice to have the full book available on my bookshelf.

Great accompaniment to basic instruction

I am using the Greatest Hits book to round out the lessons in Alfred's Adult All-in-One Course. The latter suffers a little from not having enough full-length scores to really practice the material. One or two verse ditties only go so far and everyone else in the house gets tired of Jingle Bells or The Saints Go Marching In much much sooner than the piano student him/herself.

Even though the book claims that students are ready at page 44 of All-In-One to attempt the scores in Greatest Hits, I have my doubts. The opening song is very challenging and I still am nowhere close to mastering it. It is only when I got to around page 72 of the teaching material that I felt comfortable returning to Greatest Hits and trying some of the other arrangements. In particular, My Heart Will Go On is a very satisfying piece; it never really leaves middle C and the basic beat is familiar to most people.

I highly recommend this as an accompaniment to the All-In-One course. I subtracted one star as I think it could have included at least one more easy arrangement at the start of the text. After all, students buy these supplementals to practice, and encouragement - especially for those teacing themselves - is crucial.

Note that the book does not include a CD; even though most of the pieces are well known, it still would have been a nice touch.

Harder than Expected

I am using the Adult All-In-One piano course book (which is great, by the way) to learn piano. I bought this book when I reached the point in the course book telling me I was "ready" to play more songs. Wow, this book is much harder than expected. Although the course book tells you which pages you're ready to play, you haven't really reached this ability. It's taken me a while but I finally learned the first song! I wish a CD was available as many of these songs I don't know (yes, the song can be searched online to figure out the basic beat, but a CD would be more convenient and practical). Overall, I was disappointed with this book because I eagerly anticipated being able to play more songs than the ones I had learned in the course book and really wanted to practice before moving farther along. As an adult, it's hard to find books with easy songs that aren't kids songs. I've found a few online, but in the meantime I will keep working with this book as I do like a challenge.

I had just started learning piano at a late age, with no piano nor musical background whatsoever and the Alfred books make it learning almost effortless. This book is harder than the level 1 adult course book I'm at but I enjoy learning piece #1, Love Me Tender.

About the Author

TOM REILLY is a member of the Directors Guild of America and has worked in the motion picture industry for the past thirty years. Veteran of more than forty films, Reilly worked with Woody Allen on classics such as Crimes and Misdemeanors, Husbands and Wives, Manhattan Murder Mystery, Bullets Over Broadway, Hannah and Her Sisters, Purple Rose of Cairo, and Zelig. He has also been assistant director on other major motion pictures such as Big, The Prince of Tides, Glengarry Glen Ross, The Pick-up Artist, Sabrina, and Great Expectations. He is married, has three children, and lives in Westchester County, New York.

Eric Lax is dead-on right. Author Tom Reilly, who has worked on more than 40 films as an assistant director and associate producer, has given film students and those of us who just love to watch films an invaluable guide as to how a film ends up on a screen. Just read the titles of some of his chapters:
1. Learn the vocabulary of film. 2. Learn the language of the set. 3. Pick your ten best shots. 20. Face the realties of the budget. Even fifty million won't seem like enough. 37. Assume nothing. 41. The set has chemistry: Big egos...Big money....Big art. 45. Sweat the small stuff--routinely. and the last chapter 50. Always have a nice lunch.(Ya gotta read this chapter alone several times if you're "in the biz" or plan to be!) The chapters are all fast-paced and bring us right on the set with Tom. His spot on behind-the-camera descriptions of film industry folks just sweeps you along into his world.

This should be a must read for all film school students. It is one of the few film books I've read that really brings the day-to-day details of making a picture (egos and union issues included!)to one's brain cells. The individual experiences really impart mental picture lessons that a student will never forget.

I originally bought it for my daughter who is in film school, but I'm keeping it for my own 'film-buff' library and buying another copy for her, my budding film-industry-worker-to-be!

Great, Practical Tips From a Pro

For those of you currently making films or planning to make them soon, this book is a VERY helpful list of pointers on how to approach the topics of filmmaking. Some tips tend to apply more toward million-dollar pictures, but almost all of the information in here can be applied to a low or no-budget film when you scale down the message. I've read too many filmmaking books to count and sometimes you feel you've read just about all there is to say. In this case, listening to a professional who isn't a major, known director gives a much different and valuable approach to filmmaking that you wouldn't normally get from a book written by your favorite director. Some books talk about how to get the great shots and cast the right mood but this book forces you to ask yourself how much will the shot really cost and can I do it a better way with a small budget. Sometimes, that's just as important.

Priceless Picture

Highly informative - and quite amusing! A must for anyone involved in any aspect of making films. Also a truly enjoyable read for the layman. Broken down into short, easily understood topics - each shedding light on a separate aspect of movie-making.
Tom Reilly is a graduate of Harvard College. Upon graduation he applied for one of the Directors Guild of America's highly coveted trainee positions. He succeeded in securing one, fulfilling his desire for a career in which he would not have to wear a tie to work!
Glad he did. This book is just great!
