Good for researchers, not an ASL class!
By R. KANE
Whew, talk about mind-consuming reads! I used this book to research about ASL. Definitely not for students who are beginning to learn ASL. Strictly for those who are already fluent or almost there.

Goes Way, Way Beyond the Ridiculous Threshold
By Clio Reads
Last week when I posted my review of Outlander, I wondered whether it would be smart to press on with the series in one massive reading binge, or whether, due to their epic length and the difficult emotional content, it would be smarter to take them slowly... as if I could. A longstanding joke in my family is that I was absent the day they handed out will power, and sure enough, even as I knew it would probably be too much for me emotionally, I devoured Dragonfly in Amber and then Voyager. And maybe it was too much of a good thing, or maybe it was just that I hit a wall and had no more empathy to waste on Jamie and Claire and their endless trevails, but I reached a point midway in this book where I just could not willingly suspend my disbelief anymore.

I'm not sure what happened. Having finished Outlander and Dragonfly in Amber, I was already well used to the endless cycle of Jamie and/or Claire finding themselves in mortal peril with no way out, only they do get out, celebrate their narrow escape with sexy times, and then shortly find themselves in mortal peril again. I'd suspended my disbelief quite a bit, and was just enjoying the ride.

Back in December 2011, the DBSA Romance Fiction Podcast (hosted by Sarah Wendell of Smart B****es, Trashy Books and Jane Litte of Dear Author) had an episode about the Ridiculousness Threshold -- that point at which the reader can no longer accept character or plot insanity and no longer enjoys the book. For me, I hit the Ridiculousness Threshold the moment Laoghaire's daughter walks in on Jamie and Claire at Lallybroch and calls him "Daddy!"

After that, no matter how I tried, I could not silence my inner skeptic. Almost every twist and turn of the convoluted plot made me roll my eyes and think, "Oh, for pete's sake, seriously?" The entire rest of the book is one absolutely ridiculous coincidence after another, and even in a series where I was willing to believe in time travel and the main characters' repeated skin-of-the-teeth survival against all odds, I just could not believe in pirates and slasher-killers and secret babies and zombies and shipwrecks and all of the rest of the insanity writ large over the 870 pages of this book.

And you know, the worst of it is that even though I'm totally done, and can't shut up my inner critic enough to enjoy reading, I still want to know what happens to Jamie and Claire next. Maybe I can find some Cliffs Notes.

A Long Voyage
By Kathleen L. Scheibel
I found myself growing exceedingly bored by Jamie, Claire and their unlikely antics by the time I was less than halfway through the book. Unlike the first two books in the series, in which events, though unlikely, are at least interesting, the events in this book are preposterous beyond belief. I found myself skimming pages, then skipping sections all together as I found myself confronted with yet another impossible schematic. Gabaldon seems to have tried just a bit too hard to tie in incidents from early American history to fit with the unlikely story line, and I for one am skeptical. I will read the next book in the series to see if she can get back in the groove, but if this one proves as disappointing as the last, I will move on to books more worthy of my time.

Ach! Not again . . .
By Amy43
As far as historical romance goes, its a good one. Once again i was sucked into a vortex of 1100 pages worth of drama, fantasy, danger, romance, and oh a little history sprinkled in. Gabaldon is nothing if not an engaging storyteller. But if you don't have a lot of time on your hands to keep track of multiple story lines that flimsily twine together, you might become more irritated than entranced.

Like book 1, and book 2, I completely disappeared in Voyager while I read it. I'm a fan of science fiction, so I can appreciate themes like time travel, water horses, and magic. Gabaldon's work is fabulous storytelling.

If you haven't read the book already and don't like spoilers, stop reading :o)

As the third in this series, I have to admit I've become sometimes confused, if not outright frustrated with the myriad plot lines, or better yet, lack of depth, in Voyager. There was just too much going on, and not enough circling back to explain, make a point, or satisfy the need to 'know' the characters. A few things that left me saying 'Ach'! Or is it 'Och'?

1) when Claire returns to the 1700's, the reunion with Jamie was disappointing, pretty low key in fact, and didn't deliver on emotion. And as soon as they are reunited -- there is a fire, a murder, news of a serial killer, and then another murder during a smuggling raid. When are they going to connect? As it turns out, pretty much never -- or at least not in a satisfying way.

2) the story line with the marriage to Laogohaire was beyond disappointing; Claire from the first two books would have told Jamie about the attempted murder. This plot line felt false, from Claire's reaction and silence, to Jenny's betrayal, to Jamie's being shot, to Laogohaire's lack of sexual interest in Jamie (um, isn't he so verra sexually attractive to everyone else he encounters in the book?)

3) I became weary encountering tragedy after tragedy with the pair throughout their journey. I wanted to hurry through sections to move on to the 'story' about Jamie and Claire's reuniting. Like I said in point 1, it doesn't really happen. Rather than delve deep, like when they spent their first night, or had to say good-bye, bits of their reconciliation were sprinkled here and there amidst being taken captive, thrown overboard, surviving a hurricane, and meeting up (coincidence!) with another of Jamie's besotted English officers

4) how did Jamie become the leader of French troops? it was very odd this was never explained, and even more odd that he and these frenchmen - who we never head of again - took over the ship

5) granted the world was smaller then, but it doesn't work when every single new character we encounter (with the exception of Willoughby) has a prior relationship, or a future one for that matter, with Jamie or Claire

Gabaldon had Claire voice the idea that nothing should be cut from a novel if its important to the story line. Agreed. At the same time, too many coincidences, mishaps, and unexplained events can equal a rough ride as a reader.

All that being said, I loved the book in the sense that it drew me in, and took me somewhere else for a few hours every day. And in the end, that's what a good book does! But I hope some of these points have already been addressed in book 4 -- I won't be able to skip it. As a resident of South Carolina, I just have to know ...

From journalistic accounts like Fiasco and Imperial Life in the Emerald City to insider memoirs like Jawbreaker and Three Cups of Tea , the books about America's wars in Iraq and Afghanistan could fill a library. But each explores a narrow slice of a whole: two wars launched by a single president as part of a single foreign policy. Now noted historian Terry H. Anderson examines them together, in a single comprehensive overview.

Shortly after the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, President George W. Bush told advisor Karl Rove, "I am here for a reason, and this is how we're going to be judged." Anderson provides this judgment in this sweeping, authoritative account of Bush's War on Terror and his twin interventions. He begins with historical surveys of Iraq and Afghanistan known respectively as "the improbable country" and "the graveyard of empires," and he examines U.S. policies toward those and other nations in the Middle East from the 1970s to 2000s.

Then Anderson focuses on the Bush Administration, carrying us through such events as the terrorist's attacks of 9/11, the invasion of Afghanistan and the siege of Tora Bora, the "Axis of Evil" speech, the invasion of Iraq and capture of Baghdad, and the eruption of insurgency in Iraq. He ranges from RPGs slamming into Abrams tanks to cabinet meetings, vividly portraying both soldiers in the field and such policymakers as Dick Cheney and Condoleezza Rice. Anderson describes the counter-insurgency strategy embodied by the "surge" in Iraq, and the simultaneous revival of the Taliban. He concludes with an assessment of the prosecution of the wars in the first years of Barack Obama's presidency.

Carefully researched and briskly narrated, Bush's Wars provides the single-volume, balanced history that we have been waiting for.

Review

"Thoroughly researched and written in compelling prose, this first scholarly history of the United States' war in Iraq provides a searing and persuasive critique of the way the George W. Bush administration drove this nation into a war of choice and grossly mismanaged the ensuing conflict. Author Terry Anderson also skillfully juxtaposes the naive illusions of the war's perpetrators with the intractable indigenous forces in Iraq that continue to shape its outcome. Highly recommended." - George C. Herring, author of From Colony to Superpower: U.S. Foreign Relations since 1776

"Journalists have given us their take on the conflicts of the George W. Bush era; now Terry Anderson provides the historian's perspective. Essential reading for students and the general public; experts can learn a thing or two as well." - H. W. Brands, author of Traitor to His Class: The Privileged Life and Radical Presidency of Franklin Delano Roosevelt

"Terry Anderson has written the first comprehensive history of the wars George W. Bush visited upon the world. Read it and weep" - Marilyn B. Young, author of The Vietnam Wars, 1945-1990

There's less here than meets the eye
By Bryan Gibby
It is inevitable that we should ask some key questions about the wars George W. Bush unleashed after 9/11: what happened? how did it happen? why did it happen? Professor Terry Anderson, history department at Texas A&M, takes a crack at these questions with Bush's Wars. With a favorable review from Foreign Affairs magazine, an Oxford University publishing pedigree, and advance praise from George Herring and others, I decided to give it a chance.

I was being set up for disappointment. Bush's Wars weighs in at 240 pages, which is a bit lean for a story that spans ten years, three continents, and two major wars. The back matter, though, buoyed my enthusiasm: "provides a searing-and-persuasive critique..." and "the first comprehensive history" etc. On page ix, Professor Anderson writes that he "examines the [Bush] administration's approach toward terrorism, Afghanistan, and especially Iraq..." Fair enough; Iraq is certainly the defining feature of Bush's war on terror, and Anderson is true to his outline. Of the 200+ pages that deal with "the wars", just over 15 address Afghanistan directly - the remainder is consumed by Iraq.

Bush's Wars is divided into eight chapters: two are prelude or context; the next four deal with the run up to 9/11 and its aftermath (to include taking out to Taliban government in Afghanistan), the rush to war against Saddam Hussein, the initial military operations and occupation, and the concluding insurgency, civil war, and "surge" that established conditions for an American withdrawal and transfer to Iraqi control; the last two chapters serve as epilogue and concluding remarks.

There is much potential here to establish context and understanding - why did the U.S. go to war with Iraq in the spring of 2003? How did the military and political operations unfold? Why were they less successful than advertised or expected? Unfortunately, Anderson does not deal with these questions except in a superficial and predictable way. The level of original analysis is disappointing. Rather, Anderson tends to rely on quotations to tell the story and do the heavy lifting. Quotations should be used to support the author's assessments and judgments, not substitute for them. For example, in the very last chapter, Anderson briefly surveys various causes ("influences" is probably a better term) of the Iraq war. This discussion is moderately interesting but too superficial and partisan to be analytically useful (it was the neo-cons). Most disappointing, though, was the failure to take on his most important question: Was the war "worth it?" Instead of rendering a historian's judgment, Anderson references some nebulous opinion polls and then quotes Secretary Gates's understated bombshell, "The problem with this war is that the premise on which we justified going to war proved not to be valid" (pages 233-234). That's it; time to move on to something else. After 230 pages, we know where the author stands, but he's shy about coming out and saying it. Bush's Wars is riddled with this technique of avoiding judgment (pages 101, 117, 195 are good examples).

There are other scholarly concerns. Documentation is unique...one may even say unsatisfactory. It is very difficult to establish precise citations and occasionally there is no citation for critical or potentially controversial statements. For example, Anderson informs us that Osama bin Laden "reached out to form alliances with some Shiites" (page 178). Really? An alliance with the ideological heretic? It strains credulity, but maybe it's possible. It would have been nice to see a footnote here. (As an aside, such an assertion begs the question: If OBL was willing to make a tactical alliance with Shiites, is it really so far out that al Qaeda would have made, eventually, common cause with the "secular" Saddam? Remember, "The enemy of my enemy is my friend"? This is an intriguing but unanswered question.) Documentation leads to questions about source material. Anderson for some reason relies almost entirely on contemporary news accounts, secondary sources, and self-serving memoirs of the kiss and tell variety. To emphasize the "it was the neo-cons who did it" narrative, much uncritical reliance is placed on the memories of CIA Director George Tenet, Coalition Forces Commander Ricardo Sanchez, and White House press secretary Scott McClellen. These are obviously well placed individual; they are teflon sources, though. Where are the documents, military and political? Wikileaks, anyone? Where are the interviews and oral histories? Where are the historian's follow-up questions to pin down the evidence a journalist or blogger may have overlooked, or let slip by with a wink and a nod? This does not make for a "comprehensive" or balanced history.

Other errors of fact and interpretation mar the work. The battle of Karbala occurred in 680 C.E., not 1680 (page 4), the Ottoman Empire didn't die at Versailles, but at Sevres a year later (page 7), there were no "Pakastanis" prior to 1948 (page 11), John Shalikashvili was not chairman of the joint chiefs of staff in 2003, nor was he forced to retire because of his opposition to the war (pages 110 & 125), CPA proconsul Bremer ordered Sadr's arrest for murder, not for "rebellion" (page 174), unmanned aerial vehicles - drones - are known as UAVs, not UVAs (page 182). Anderson also confuses types of IEDs, saying that EFPs from Iran were flipping over heavily armored Bradley fighting vehicles (page 207) [EFPs kill the passengers, leaving the vehicle relatively intact; the DBIED - deep buried IED - will flip armored vehicles. The former were used exclusively by Shiite militias; the latter, by Sunni insurgents.] A "COP" actually refers to a "combat outpost," not a "command post" as the author states (page 206).

Individually, these may be minor errors. But, the cascade of bad information that should have been caught in Oxford University Press's referee and editorial processes, if not in the original writing, suggest a degree of sloppiness or ignorance. At least, an Aggie Iraq war veteran could have read the manuscript and saved a lot of these mistakes. I couldn't help thinking of the thirteenth chime of the clock: wrong in and of itself, but also calling into question the previous twelve chimes.

My big problem with Bush's Wars is simple. Those on the political left will love it; those on the right will hate it, ironically for the same reason. There's nothing new here. Anderson reprises the same New York Times, Washington Post, Bob Woodward, Thomas Ricks, Helen Thomas narratives that any half-conscious American already knows: the Bush Administration blew it. The American military also blew it, but for some reason, Anderson gives most military men and women a pass; it's all Bush's fault (and the neo-cons, of course).

A balanced and comprehensive history of the wars waged by George W. Bush is important to have. Unfortunately, Bush's Wars isn't it.

Guide for the Perplexed
By G.X. Larson
Written by a professional historian, Bush's Wars is a relatively short (~240 pages) book about the recent wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. (Fun fact: I was taught how to spell "Afghanistan" in the 5th grade -- presumably my teacher wanted the his students to know how to spell the name of the country that we had just invaded -- I am now in college.) Anderson begins the book with two chapters outlining the history of the two countries (mostly Iraq) as well as the history of American involvement in the region. After this it is full steam ahead. The verdict: if Anderson's account is anywhere near a representation of objective reality, then history and its stewards will not look upon Bush's wars fondly. Anderson skillfully blends direct quotations from members of the administration and from outside commentators with historical narrative and commentary. The result is a convincing account of the way the wars were sold and conducted; occurrences of doublespeak and -- I realize the semantics of this word are open to question, ahem -- lies are well documented, as are flat out gaffes like this one from the president in 2002: "Moral truth is the same in every culture, in every time, and in every place". I hope to read this book again in the near future, taking notes the second time. My only criticisms are that the endnotes are not formatted in a friendly fashion, and that the book is almost entirely about Iraq. Nevertheless, highly recommended.

Great Book
By Casey Hicks
I think that the title may seem misleading at first. I thought it would be about both Iraq and Afghanistan, but when I was reading it I noticed that Afghanistan was not mentioned very much. Bush's Wars is actually about Iraq and the Bush administration's political and domestic "war" to invade Iraq.

That being said, Anderson's book is eye opening. I actually found myself getting slightly angry reading it. Very great book if you want to understand the process that Bush underwent in order to invade Iraq.

Helpful Within the Genre
By A dad
Unfortunately, the 8th and 9th editions are out of date, having been published in 2000 and 2003 respectively. Now this book is in its 10th edition, published in August 2009.

I just can't believe you can get these older edition used for a few dollars before shipping. When a new textbook comes out in this subject, it is never cheap. The 10th edition is currently $146.67 and worth it if you're getting into AIS (accounting information systems). Still, the former editions can serve in places as a reference to this day.

For convenience, here's a link to the latest edition: Accounting Information Systems (10th Edition). I wrote a review for the edition in this link, the 10th edition.

Since I am in the field, although my area in not purely AIS since I'm a practitioner and not a designer of accounting systems, I can say things are good still. What I mean by that is that so far in this economic downturn, accounting information systems work has not been on the decline to my observation and from talking with others in it.

Of course, the subject is very dry. And if there is one warning that I may give it is about caring for your back. I had to reach a level in many subject areas as does everyone in AIS. Along the way I got advanced degrees and many certifications. But I ended up with serious back pain, surely the result of racking up plenty of sitting time in totally non-ergonomic chairs. It's not just something to think about but you need to manage it early through exercises to strengthen the core muscles that hold up your spine, stretching throughout the day, and using ergonomic chairs and principles.

One more thing. Not all AIS books are equal even though they're probably all with their special strong points.

A Very Good Investment
By A dad
As a CPA and CISA (Certified Information Systems Auditor), I am forever trying to keep up with topics covered in the grand subject known as Accounting Information Systems. Since I practice and manage the financial accounting function, I do well by keeping current with a few books including those of Bodnar and Hopwood.

Accounting Information Systems, 10th edition, continues the tradition of strong transaction processing and cycle processes chapters. In fact, the 10th edition shows meaningful updates in all the chapters and continues to improve upon conciseness. I recall the 8th edition, published in 2000, that was 684 pages and had larger dimensions. Thankfully the authors made a major move toward conciseness starting with their 9th edition and have continued. The only thing I miss about pre-9th editions is the hardcover.

New strengths in the 10th edition include excellent chapters on information security and information control and audit. Also, the systems analysis and design (SAD) area is much improved and makes for easier reading.

This book is an investment as there is value in staying current in an area that remains dynamic in this economy. While the subject is dry, no question about that, the authors have done what they can to make each topic more accessible. That's why I recommend this book over others in the category.

Outdated
By J. Griffin
With technology, we are constantly revamping our ideals and our techniques. This book has the reader left in the dark ages. Sadly, there are not many books on this specialized topic, so schools are still forced to use it. In my experience, this book is excellent when discussing internal controls and does a nice job of giving the reader a brief overview of how an accounting system works. Great for newbies into the field, but very dull for someone like me who has been worked with several different systems over the past ten years. That brings me to another point, the book is very dry. Don't look for humor or interesting facts here. Just plain information.

If you are a teacher considering this book, I encourage you to either supplement or update the information provided in the text or to find another book.

The Bully Goat Grim: A Maynard Moose TaleFrom August House

This hilarious Maynard Moose tale as retold by master storyteller Willy Claflin takes us on another whimsical journey with the misadventures of a Bully Goat who suffers from Random Hostility Syndrome. The Bully Goat clashes with a three headed troll “fambly” and is undone by a baby girl troll when she suddenly realizes that, “…everybody ought to mess with him!” Her inspiration leads to a confrontation with the Bully Goat using only a pillow and three raggedy old bed sheets. After she cleverly outwits the Bully Goat, all of the forest animals follow her example and the threat of the bully is eliminated. Fortunately, everyone lives happily for “never afterwords” except for the Bully Goat since nobody likes a “dubnoxious beastly”. A Moose-English Glossary is included along with Hoofnotes to help guide you through the translation. This latest fractured fairy tale from the Piney Woods marks the third collaboration from the creative team who brought you the 2011Texas Bluebonnet Award winning book, The Uglified Ducky and the award winning Rapunzel & the Seven Dwarfs. James Stimson has worked his magic once again with his eclectic stylized illustrations that depict the humor of the offbeat trolls and capture the joy of the forest animals inhabiting the Piney Woods.

Rewarding, But Demanding
By Pop Bop
It has been a long, loong day and now it's storytime. If you need to you can pull out Winnie the Pooh and read an easy, mellow tale. Maybe some Richard Scarry; maybe one of your other favorite illustrated storybooks. But probably not this one, at least not until you've done it a few times and it has become familiar to your little listeners. Here's why.

The author, Willy Claflin, is a professional storyteller and he works best in an oral tradition. Accents, inflection, hands and arms and facial expressions. He knows how to physically sell a story. And maybe most important of all - he knows how to follow an audience and tell whether it is with him or he needs to circle around and drive home a part of the story before moving on. Well, that's what you have to do with this book, a written version of one of his Maynard Moose "Mother Moose" stories.

There is a running joke about double negatives. There is a big part devoted to the "soporific" effect of extended planning discussions. There is a lot of adult humor worked in to the story. None of this is beyond a little listener, but you have to make sure that listener gets it before moving on. So you have to repeat, elaborate, explain - in short, tell - the story, not just read it. You have funny mixed-up words, cockeyed story telling, odd characters, a silly plot, and a certain sense of off kilter anarchy. Kids love that, especially if it's coming from Mom or Dad. You have to commit to reading this book, and then I'd bet dollars to donuts you start doing it in a funny voice. Doesn't that sound like a nice treat for every now and then?

An added bonus is that the drawings are offbeat, angular, out of proportion and stylized with a real sense of humor and fun. Some of the art is practically frameable, which is a huge step up from the often just cute or serviceable illustrations in some books. This seems like the kind of book that encourages you to draw the listener in to the pictures and to point out funny bits. What an appealing extra.

So, a solid, unique and pretty sophisticated choice for adventurous readers and listeners.

Please note that I received a free ecopy of this book in exchange for a candid review. Apart from that I have no connection at all to either the author or the publisher of this book.

An absurd delight
By Emma Bland Smith
"Far Away in the Northern Piney Woods, there lives a storyteller named Maynard Moose..." begins The Bully Goat Grim, the third in a comical new series of fractured fairy tales by storyteller and author Willy Claflin. Like its predecessors (The Uglified Ducky and Rapunzel and the Seven Dwarfs), this very funny parody of the Billy Goats Gruff is based on an engaging premise, that of being told in the words of a certain moose named Maynard.

The as-told-to mechanism carries the entire book beautifully, and allows Claflin to employ the sort of tone and language usually reserved for in-person storytelling. Maynard the narrator talks in a folksy sort of moose-speak, complete with lisp and creative grammar. Read aloud, the words amble affably along, lending themselves perfectly to classroom and library story times. (There are distinct echoes of that other fictional storyteller, Uncle Remus.)

Claflin's version turns the familiar story on its head, making the billy goat the bad guy and creating a "fambly" of three trolls who live under a bridge and spend their free time bringing home useless objects from the dump. Children will laugh at the mommy troll with three heads, chant along with the addictive refrain ("Beware, beware, the Bully Goat Grim! / Nobody better not mess with him!"), and cheer on the baby troll who saves the day by knowing a double negative when she hears one.

Along with this broad humor that will appeal to children of all ages, there is also a more sophisticated, tongue-in-cheek element. Here is how Maynard describes the Bully Goat Grim: "He was twice more larger than normal, having bulked up in his youth on wild tuberoot, which as you may understand, contains a dabundance of natural steroids." Adults will smirk.

With a satisfying ending and glossy, appealing cartoon-inspired illustrations, Maynard Moose's latest is an absurd delight that will have kids and adults giggling more every time they read it. Be careful--after several readings you might find yourself talking like Maynard Moose himself, and saying things like, "Ok, kids, it's time to go get cleanified." But maybe that's not such a bad thing.

As an added bonus, the book comes with a CD of the author reading the story in his inimitably hilarious storyteller's voice.

A Quirky Twist On A Beloved Fairy Tale
By Nocturnus
This was an awesomely quirky and fun new take on the Billy Goat's Gruff! I loved this story so much more than the original because it was so much more fun to read! I can't wait to read more fractured fairytales by this amazingly talented author!

The illustrations were gorgeous and darkly amusing especially for adults! I can't imagine anyone not liking this original and hilarious version of this clasic story! The nuances of the story will be lost on younger readers but that just lends an amazing depth to the story for older and more advanced readers and gives it an amazing amount of reread ability for years to come for young readers. The illustrations though dark and clearly twisted they are cute enough to entrall younger readers without frightening them :)

***This book is suitable for readers of all ages and is written at an advanced second grade level but can be read to younger or less advanced readers

This story was re-written for a fantastic February 1949 episode of the ESCAPE radio show
By Lurch
This story was re-written for a fantastic February 1949 episode of the ESCAPE radio show. It so intrigued me after listening to it that I wanted to read the original Arthur Conan Doyle story published in 1890. As it turns out, the radio show writer changed much of the story to better flow in the 30 minutes air time, and in some respects made it more interesting. He added some great dialogue. Some Characters changed roles. The basic plot of the radio show, however, remained unchanged from the original story.
Now the original Doyle story focused on the arch villain, the perpetrator and mastermind of the crime, which he has repeated in his Sherlock Holmes stories, and all of the pieces of the mystery fall into place at the end, which has a humorous ending to lighten up this steady paced classic. A quick read....but download the radio show and listen to it after reading this short story...as a treat.
