The titular term foundations could go in at least two different directions when it comes to a work related to counseling. On the one hand, foundations could refer to the core techniques of the practice. On the other, it could mean the grounds upon which counseling is even possible. Illovsky chose the latter option when composing his book. In an effort to make his contribution distinct from other similar introductory works, Illovsky labors valiantly to incorporate cross-cultural perspectives into his account.

Especially in the first half of the book, Illovsky seeks to explains, at a preliminary level, how it is that people are able to engage in counseling behaviors. He covers areas such as evolution altruistic behaviors in animal species as well as how such behaviors may have aided ancient humans genetics, neurology, and sociological aspects of human life (3-12).

Doing this multilayered work is necessary for Illovsky s implicit argument that counseling although a product of the modern West can be useful to non-Western cultures as well as the West s need to learn counseling habits from other cultures. To support this contention, Illovsky turns to cross-cultural comparisons throughout the text. These comparisons add value to Illovsky s account by illustrating that counseling might work in any culture and how certain cultural differences in body language, speech habits, and cultural codes can interfere with effective counseling if not properly accounted for.

Getting back to the basics as the book progresses, Illovsky attempts to cover comprehensively the various types of theories that have emerged from modern psychology. These include personality types and emotions as well as how to counsel (e.g. psychoanalytic, cognitive-behavioral, etc.). The virtue of this approach is that the reader can quickly get a sense of the range of options available. The vice resides in Illovsky s refusal to lend an authoritative voice with which to guide the reader to determine which options are better than others and why.

The book is first and foremost directed toward mental health counseling. Thus academic advisors will find only intermittent portions of immediate benefit. That said, Illovsky does remind us of several things advisors would do well to remember. One involves the Pygmalion effect (a.k.a. the expectancy advantage) wherein if the client expects to be successful in therapy, the probability is increased that the client will succeed. If the client does not expect to be successful, the probability of success is decreased (36). I strongly suspect this principle holds to true for students in their approach to academic counseling. Another point worth flagging pertains to advisors habit of referring students to mental health counselors for students in psychological distress. Illovsky points to studies that challenge our cultural assumption that such counseling is noticeably beneficial for people (124-25). If these findings are accurate, they raise ethical questions about our referral practice since we are encouraging students to devout time and financial resources toward these services. Lastly, and on a more encouraging note, Illovsky s examples of how knowledge generated in non-Western cultures can have positive effects on people reminds advisors in Western cultures to pay close attention to the practices of their peers in non-Western locations when reflecting on how to improve services, especially as the student population on many campuses in western countries become increasing international in their composition. --William E. Higham's work stands as the seminal work in the history of American nativism. The work is a careful, well-documented study of nationalism and ethnic prejudice, and chronicles the power and violence of these two ideas in American society from 1860 to 1925. He significantly moves beyond previous treatments of nativism, both in chronology and in interpretive sophistication. Higham defines nativism as a defensive type of nationalism or an intense opposition to an internal minority on the grounds of the group's foreign connections. By defining nativism as a set of attitudes or a state of mind, he sets the course for his book as tracing "trace an emotionally charged impulse" rather than "an actual social process or condition." As he argues that the ideological content of nativism remained consistent, he uses emotional intensity as a measure to trace in detail public opinion from the relative calm following the Civil War to the Johnson-Reed act of 1924 that severely limited European immigration.
Strangers in the Land is, then, a history of public opinion, whose purpose is to show how nativism evolved in society and in action. Higham seeks to explain what could inflame xenophobia and who resisted it. He saw his work as part of a renewed interest in the study of nationalism following the national upheavals in the wake of the McCarthy hearings. Surely Higham's mentor at the University of Wisconsin, intellectual historian Merle Curti, influenced Higham's approach in seeking to examine the power of nationalism as an idea. Also influential was the intellectual climate of the 1950s with its of distrust of ideology and distain of prejudice. Higham admits being repelled by the nationalist delusions of the Cold War, again helping to explain why his study concentrates on seeking some explanation for the irrational and violent outbreaks. The book thus focuses on points of conflict, "antagonisms that belong within ideologies of passionate national consciousness." For example, Higham's explains the 100 percent American movement in terms of progressive ideals and the desire of Americans to shape immigrants into a particular ideal of "Americanness" through education and assimilation. This intellectual construct eventually gave way to the racial thinking to which Higham assigns much influence in the efforts to restrict immigration. Ideology is also central to his chapter on the history of the idea of racism in which he argues that Anglo-Saxon nationalism, literary naturalism and a nascent understanding of genetics combined to bring forth arguments for immigration restriction to preserve the racial purity of the American people. Thus, key for Higham's argument is the power of ideas in shaping individual behavior and thereby shaping history.

There is no Gene for Bigotry...

... none that has been identified at least, but "nativism" does have some of the marks of what Richard Dawkins has called a "meme" - derived from the word 'memory' - a kind of evolutionary package of cultural 'knowledge'. Like genetic packages, cultural patterns are inherited and thus inherent, and like genes, 'memes' can be efficiently re-adapted to other functions than their originals.

"Strangers in the Land" is a classic study of American Nativism from the Civil War to the 1920s. By no coincidence, the same era was the heyday of Jim Crow, of lynchings and ethnic cleansing directed against African-Americans. The hatred directed against Catholics by nativist movements merged eventually into the hatred of "blacks" in the resurgence of the Ku Klux Klan, the acme of Nativism. But this same era was also the heyday of American anti-Semitism, culminating in the exclusion acts passed by Congress against Eastern European Jews as well as Sicilian Catholics. That anti-Semitism - like it or not, Americans - played an enabling part of Hitler's unchallenged ascent to power and in the Holocaust, when America kept the door closed to Jewish escapees. And let's not forget that nativism and anti-immigrant bigotry lay at the core of the exclusion acts against Chinese and Japanese, who might have sought freedom and opportunity in "Beikoku" - "Beautiful Country", the name used in Japan then for America.

In other words, as author Higham demonstrates, bigotry/nativism is a "pattern" - his use of that word seems to me to approach the idea of a meme - that can serve the cause of hatred and exclusion of any ethnic/racial/religious minority. And it's almost always evident that bigotry expressed toward one minority merely temporarily masks bigotry felt towards all "others." Today's nativist fear and loathing of "wetbacks" and "islamicists" contains all the memetic material needed for tomorrow's recrudescent anti-Semitism and societal persecution of.... ___________. About the Author
Art Carpenter, an independent consultant and statistician, has been a SAS user since the mid-1970s. He provides training and instruction on the SAS macro language and other SAS topics to SAS users nationwide. In addition to being the general editor of the Art Carpenter SAS Software Series, his impressive list of publications includes Annotate: Simply the Basics, his co-authored Quick Results with SAS/GRAPH Software, two chapters in Reporting from the Field, and over four dozen papers and posters presented at the SAS Users Group International (SUGI) conference and various regional and international SAS Users Group conferences.

Art has served as a steering committee chairperson of both the Southern California SAS Users Group (SoCalSUG) and the San Diego SAS Users Group (SANDS) conferences. He has also served as a conference co-chair of the Western Users of SAS Software (WUSS) conference, and conference chair and Executive Board member at SUGI.

It is definitely not for advanced programmers, it is not designed to train you the ability to write your own code entirely as when using C++ or R language.

The book basically tells you how to manipulate existing SAS macro functions with the framework of SAS data step. I strongly doubt that a reader who finishes this book would acquire the ability to write a simple code on his own, for example, a code to compute the sum of integers from 1 to 100 under Macro environment.

But still, this is not a very bad book for two reasons:

1, there are not many books about writing (true) code in SAS;

2, the programming under SAS macro is very limited due to its poor design.

Honor and Respect

The Blood and Guts is the most inspirational bodybuilding book out there. I have never read a bodybuilding book that emphasizes on honor and respect. If you take out all stories about bodybuilding in this book, you might think it's a book about self-help. "...be honest, be of good character and be a person of your word. Those attributes will take you far."
The book shows the history of Mr.Yates's competition in the competitive world of bodybuilding with photos (more than 50% of the book is photos). It gradually shows the progress of his muscle building. It has some photos of when he began bodybuilding, and it gave me a hope to be the best I can be; he wasn't big at the beginning just like everybody. Mr.Yates believes that you can surpass a bodybuilder of superior genetic and less determination even though you believe you have inferior genetic if you have twice the determination. He believes anybody can go beyond their genetic potential with hard work. So demand the very best of yourself.
Doing things one at a time has been his doctrine of success. He believes a big success is the sum of little successes all combined. I, too, believe this strongly. For example, to grow one inch muscle around your arm, you first have to determine to grow a quarter of an inch.
The only thing I disagree about some bodybuidling technique of the book is that doing quick positive moves. I have injured my shoulder while lifting too fast, and I couldn't work out for a week. I do 2 second positive (muscle contraction) and 4 second negative (muscle release). Doing slow moves have definitely helped me avoid injuries and concentrate more on stimulating my muscle.
Reading this book will not only help you to gain muscle, but also improve yourself as a person.

A no nonsense approach to bodybuilding

I've read several books and magazines by bodybuilding pros who want to voice their training views and opinions. The disapointment with other authors was they just repeated what other bodybuilders wrote. Nothing original. Dorian Yates' approach to bodybuilding is familiar - Mentzer's approach - but superior. I've been following Dorian Yates' career since he was crowned Mr. Olympia. His rate of improvement from year to year is phenomenal. I know some people might say that it just the drugs, I disagree. Yates' philosophy and inner drive is what makes him constantly improve. Today - 1998 - other pros now follow his hardcore, intense approach. In the world of bodybuilding: Yates is the leader and everybody else is a follower. Even though this book was published in 1993 his methods have remained the same. In my opinion, follow someone's advise if it works, if it doesn't ,throw it out! I would recommend this book to only those who are ready to follow an intense program. Wimps not need apply. I read this book in a day. I couldn't put it down. Pick up a copy and you'll see a difference in body, attitude, and desire. "Two thumbs and a lat spread way up!!"

The true meaning of Ultimate Bodybuilding Training Intensity

Dorian Yates is the living & breathing example of true Bodybuilding Training & Intensity. Very few people ever experience such will-power to the point of self-destruction. I can identify with his training intensity as I have lifted weights & semi-pro 'body-built' for the last 20 years. Dorian is such an inspiration to me & his book is THE ultimate in bodybuilding training. Arnold would talk trash but Dorian would let his body do the talking on stage!!! I love it! I saw Dorian guest pose a few years back in Chicago at the Jr USA, I have never seen such an impressive physique. I have never seen such a HUGE, AWESOME bodybuilder in my life! And probably never will again. I recommend this book to anyone interested in learning what REAL bodybuilding is. If you can find one of his books available that is. P.S. Buy Dorian's video - You will freak out!!!

About the Author
Rocky Castleberry was raised on a ranch in Central Texas and grew up around animals all of his life. He bought his first llama when he was 14 years old and has been hooked ever since. He received his Bachelor s Degree in 1986 from Texas A&M and started his own business but has continued to raise animals over the years. He has been involved with the capture and relocation of several species including (but not limited to) wild Rhea, Axis Deer, Sika Deer, Black Buck Antelope and spent 3 weeks in the Arctic circle capturing free range Reindeer for export. Capture was accomplished by conventional means such as darting and netting but the more exciting captures were accomplished by helicopters and rounding up the reindeer with snowmobiles miles from civilization. He has been a professional animal handler, handling a multitude of animals include all types of deer, antelope, elk, tapirs, hippos, giraffe, alligators, gnu, eland and smaller pet animals such as the Lemurs, Coatimundi, Kangaroo, Kinkajou, Genets, etc. (Once he even had to handle a 24 foot Boa Constrictor). He has developed special exotic animal handling facilities to handle different species to alleviate as much stress on the animals as possible. As a matter of fact, one of his designs was used to set the standards for the USDA in Central Texas. To help improve and diversify genetics within the United States, he has been involved in importing Red Deer from New Zealand and used the first cervidae insemination program in the United States. He has imported Sika Deer from Canada, Emu from Holland and has shipped Emu and other ratite eggs across the United States. He has also been involved in introducing the exotic animals into existing industries to improve genetics and yield. He once spent 6 weeks in Europe helping import exotic cattle into the United States. Rocky has been on television talk shows, has been interviewed by USA Today about the future of the animal industry and interviewed by the Boston Globe about exotic pets. He also held several press conferences in Nome & Anchorage Alaska during the importation of the reindeer and was discussed on Paul Harvey during the Reindeer adventure. He has been interviewed on financial television shows in New England about his financial book, Creating Wealth For The Average Guy . He owns a land Surveying firm, develops residential & commercial real estate and raises several species of animals. He currently resides near Georgetown, Texas with his wife, daughter and son and continues to work with his animals on a daily basis.

I liked this book. I like how the storys and experences were shared. It is a good First Coatimundi book. Especially if you want to learn about them, or if you are thinking about getting your first pet coatimundi. I wish this book would have been out when I got my first Coati, but it had not been published yet. It has some good genteral info in it, and definalty touches on some important subjects. I definatly suggest this book to everyone! My only wish that it would have had more in-depth info on them, and on coatimundi's behavior, and sounds.

Raising a Coatimundi

I will be getting a Coatimundi in the next few months and I wanted to get as much information about them. This book was recommended to me and I bought it. WHAT A WEALTH OF INFORMATION this book is. I have read it over a few times and I now have all the stuff ready for when my new baby comes I will have everything necessary to keep it happy. Then to find out that this book was written by the son of the woman that I am getting my pet from was just a hoot. I will tell anyone that if you are going to get this VERY special pet that the purchase of this book is necessary. Also it has some humorous moments in it too. It is nice to have someone who has been rasiing these types of animals for over 30 years to write a book to help those of us who are just starting. Totally recommend this book, it is an easy and short read for those who really don't like to read. If is VERY informative and also can help you make the decision if you would like to have this type of pet. Kudos to this book!!!!
