Great way to get your feet wet

I inherited a MakerBot Replicator 2X when I moved into a new classroom space, and this text has been a great way to get my feet wet with the nuts and bolts of getting the most out of the printer without simply relying on designs from Thingverse. There's a lot here that fits with the CMK/MakerEd ethos of being willing to take off the teacher hat and put on a learner hat. The "recipes," while prescriptive, are helpful in making me feel at ease working with an expensive piece of school purchased equipment. I'm glad my school's Director of Libraries got this book, and can see it being a great resource in the year ahead as our middle school's makerspace takes off.

A great guide to 3D printing

The Invent To Learn Guide to 3D Printing in the Classroom was a great overview of the different types of 3D printers, CAD programs and what they are capable of, types of plastics used and why and some great projects to try using the different CAD type programs. I found this very informative and a great launching pad into 3D printing.

I've been interested in learning 3D Printing, from design to production, since I first heard of this new emerging technology. I happened to be browsing Amazon and found this ebook available for free for a limited time so I went ahead and downloaded it. I'm happy I did because now I feel I have a better understanding about the 3D printing process and how simple it can be. The author makes it look easy to do so if I do decide to create my own 3D products in the future based on what I've learned from this book I will feel more comfortable applying that knowledge. The book includes lots of great tips and information that you should be aware of and websites where you can see what other people have created, tools needed, software needed to design your products, as well as how to choose a good 3D printer, if you're looking to purchase one. It is good, not just for the classroom, but for anyone wanting to learn 3D Printing design and production.

Loved this book, Colonel Tom Kelly has a way with word that will put you in the woods with him. Just ordered "The Season" and can't wait for it to get here! Must read for anyone who has ever chased a wild turkey, or just enjoy listening to "old timer" type stories

very well done

When I was taking archeology classes, they tended to be dry, because they tended to look only at the parts, not the whole. Take you yourself- if you were the subject of a very gruesome lab experiment, and your parts were laid out on shelves- teeth, bones, credit cards, shoes, and so on- are you not much more than the mere sum of your parts? OK, cancel that image. While your parts may tell something of what you are, the relationship between the parts is far more interesting. This book has a massive commitment- to pull together many parts. I think it does it rather well. Is it perfect? Of course not, what book is? Is it fascinating? Yes. It has something of James Michener's approach to history, as in the book Hawaii, or Chesapeake: A Novel. Michener is not correct in every detail, but he tells an engaging story. This book does that also. This is not a short book, of course, however it read well for me. The author is smart enough to speak with Native Americans, to get clarity. One doesn't always see that with archeologists. When it comes to several myths and misconceptions about Native Americans in the state, she is like a hot summer sun on mist. I love seeing well-researched books, like this one, even if I don't necessarily agree with everything said. There was, however, very little to disagree with. This had to have been a very difficult book to write, because native worldviews are not western, generally. There are a very few books that give a taste of the indigenous world view. Of these, I could mention House of Shattering Light: Life as an American Indian Mystic, Journey to the Ancestral Self: The Native Lifeway Guide to Living in Harmony with the Earth Mother (Bk.1), Lost Secrets of Ancient Hawaiian Huna, Volume 1, and The Original Instructions: Reflections of an Elder on the Teachings of the Elders, Adapting Ancient Wisdom to the Twenty-First Century, among others. A Mohegan chief, as noted in Mohegan Chief: The Story of Harold Tantaquidgeon, wrote a book about his participation in the Coast Guard, during Prohibition, and as an aviator during WW II. I found this years ago. His sister, Gladys, I think had a book out on herbal use. The one thing I would wish for is that a book like this one, of Lucianne's, might inspire Native Americans to write about their culture, at least those aspects they feel comfortable sharing in a book. Systems Theory was developed in part by Gregory Bateson, based on ideas in indigenous cultures. Systems Theory, as TQM, or lean, or other applications, is transforming the workplace, mostly for the better. I believe many other fascinating ideas await, in indigenous cultures, including ideas that will help us solve the major problems facing us. This book is very useful for that purpose, alone. Thanks, Lucianne, for this labor of love. Sometimes one sees negative reviews, done by people who seem to have an axe to grind, who seem to want to drain out their negativity and resentment. If you get one of those, please understand that it is about the reviewer, not your book. Your book is magnificent. I love your book, and I mentioned its existence immediately to my friends who have an interest in this area. I get nothing for saying this, it's just how I feel.

Precursor to descrimination

This is historically correct with an eye to the future. This should be mandatory reading for Ct. politicians and most importantly the OFFICE OF FEDERAL ACKNOWLEDGEMENT at the Bureau of Indian Affairs. Incompetency and corruption are their coin of the realm. Truth and Justice are left at the curb.

Best Memoir I've Read Since "Liar's Club"

What a great book! Fun, moving, and with a really unexpected ending. Though the promo material highlights her childhood as a white girl in a black neighborhood, this memoir is a more sophisticated story--and more universal story -- of a child who can't find her place in her family. And the most moving aspect of this book is her success in finding a place in the world, and what it ultimately costs her. Yes, it's heartbreaking in places, but it's hysterical in others and most importantly -- the story is compelling. I literally couldn't put this book down and I have the circles under my eyes to prove it.

This semi-autobiograpical memoir is really great airplane food!

Wow, apart from a bird identification book, this is the very first amazon vine product that I might have purchased in 'real life' and I'm happy to say that this is definitely a worthwhile acquisition.
Before we begin let's establish what this book is not: It is not hilarious or tragic as a cover blurb indicates. It is also not, strictly speaking, truly autobiographical as the author declaims up front something to the effect that many of the things in the book might never have happened and that she uses composites of characters to represent distinct personalities in her story.
What this book is is a very charming, often poignant, quite incisive, well-told story based on the remembrances of a caucasian woman whose childhood was spent living in a deteriorating Seattle neighborhood with a father who chose to 'go black.'
Interestingly, it is also a real testimonial to the quality and effectiveness of the the Seattle public school system and civic organizations in their efforts to provide opportunities to its most promising albeit less privileged (read wealthy) chidren.
The story revolves around a white girl who, along with her younger sister remain in the custody of her ne'er do well father who has fashioned himself a black man in a white man's body. They live in an urban Seattle neighborhood which has become predominantly black; a change that the girls' father revels in.
The author does a wonderful job of describing the struggles and triumphs she experiences as she struggles with the multiple challenges of adolescence; parental divorce; racial comity, difference and divide; and familial and peer group strife.
A really great thing about the book is that the author is able to give insightful analysis of the dynamics of the unfolding tale as if she was fully cognizant of them as a little girl. Of course the picture only became clear to her later, in adulthood, which is undoubtedly why she makes her disclaimer about the events depicted in the book.
Ms. Wolff knows how to spin a story and once you begin this book I doubt that you will want to put it down until you have finished it.
I began reading it on a flight from the West Coast to the East coast and found the book to be the perfect length for this journey as I got through the first third on the first leg and finished up the rest just as we were making the approach to land on the second leg: Brilliant!
You will definitely become emotionally invested in this book and I recommend it as a very satisfying entertainment that is better than mere candy or a popcorn movie.

A Hard Book to Rate

This book is hard to rate because although I am African-American I had similar experiences as Mishna Wolff. The insult some of the reviewers feel is that the author is a white woman who experienced what many of us wish were "stereotypes"; however, in reality they do exist in the African-American community. I guess I can relate to the author's experiences because I was a child who not only had no athletic ability, liked to read encyclopedias, had no rhythm (a no-no), couldn't jump rope (that no rhythm curse) and hated fighting. I spent many days wanting to play with children my own age, but didn't want to be drawn into a fight or insulted. As a child, I did begin to befriend white children who did not like to fight and insult, but I received much flack about their friendships from my family. They actually preferred me to have friends who were black, even if they were mean.

I believe the author tried to soften the story with the impression that her experiences had more to do with economics. She wrote about her father's girlfriend, who was a nurse, who the author seems to feel was the most positive role model. She was much different than the other girlfriends and even the author's mother. She also tried to soften her impressions of African-Americans by giving examples of her white classmates who had very dysfunctional lives despite their luxurious lives.

The problems with the book are the following:
a. The author doesn't have any experiences (which she cared to divulge) with poor white people. Actually she doesn't have experiences with any white people besides her class and sports team mates, teachers, coaches, her parents and a brief mention of her uncle during a wedding. White people are mysteriously absent during her life,
b. The author ends the book abruptly during her junior high school years. We have no idea what her high school experience was and what happened during her hormone-induced teenage years,
c. We don't know how her sister faired. Her sister was comfortable with the neighborhood children and went to school within the community.

The oddest part of the book was not the community where she was raised but her parents. I don't care what a person's socio-economic status happens to be, parents still want the best for their children. Her father seemed intent on interfering with any attempt the author made to better her life. I also believe there was more to the dissolution of her parent's marriage since her father, who was obviously neglectful, to receive custody. There are some skeletons in the closet that the author doesn't seem to want to divulge or doesn't know.
Overall, I guess the author exposes the angst of being helpless in a dysfunctional family and not fitting, which is not that uncommon with children. Her excuse for her oddness was that she just was in the wrong neighborhood. It was hard to accept that a white woman was exposing a few of the bad aspects of growing up in the African-American community. However, I had to put my ego aside and be non-judgmental because she was only writing about her experiences and perceptions. I guess the objection to this book is that many blacks don't fit the stereotypes. Rather than be upset, we should be happy that we have transcended those behaviors and teach the positive behaviors to our children.

I can only give it three stars because the ending was abrupt and didn't describe her high school and college years.

a great resource

As a Bible college graduate and youth pastor, I could not do without this commentary set. Wiersbe uses everday illustrations and gives a good explanation of the text. However as with many commentators, some difficult passages are skipped. I think the new testament series is just a step above these.

The author explains the text and makes application. You gain head knowledge and are encouraged to live a godly Christian life. It is not too academic for the average person, and not too basic for the mature Christian.

About the Author
Holly Durst was born and raised in a small town in Ohio. She graduated with a Bachelors degree in Communication from Walsh University. Holly then moved to Los Angeles where she discovered her love for writing childrens books. Her two favorite things are chocolate and socks. The idea for writing her first book came when Holly was given a gift of a box of chocolate and a pack of socks. The idea is priceless! While living in Los Angeles, Holly managed a high end clothing boutique in Beverly Hills for five years. It was there, where she was spotted and asked to be on ABC's hit show 'The Bachelor.' Three years after her unsuccessful quest for love on television, Holly was asked to come back for season two of 'Bachelor Pad.' This venture was a lot more successful than the last. Bachelor Pad is a competition show competing for love and money. On the show she met Blake Julian, a previous contestant on 'The Bachelorette.' They started dating after the show and by the finale, they were engaged. The engagement wasn't the only big thing to happen to Holly on the show; she won! Holly walked away with $125,000 and the love of her life! Holly currently resides in Greenville, South Carolina. Blake has a dental practice here so she happily moved across the country to be with him. Holly gives all her praise to God for His many blessings in her life.

Amazingly cute kids book, a must buy!

C's Review(She is 6) Chocolate Socks is a awesome book, I want chocolate socks for real and I bet they would be so good. In the book a little girl invented chocolate socks, this book is about doing two different things and combine together to make them real. If I could combine any two things I would combine two of my favorite things which is Lollipops and my Ipod Touch. I could lick it while I listen to it.

Mom's Review- This has got to be one of the cutest children's books I have ever read, and trust me I read a ton of them! This book really has it all, a fun story line that keeps the kids entertained. A great message, one that really resonated with my girls, and the cutest little illustrations. I am not always a fan of rhyming books but in this story it is really the icing on the cake! I've now read this book at least 20 times and it is still just as cute as it was the first round!

Sooo Cute!! Positive Encouragement - Great Story!

This book is well written and beautifully illustrated. It is a joy for adults to read aloud to younger children, but the story is captivating yet easy enough to follow to encourage young readers, as well. The storyline encourages children to "think outside the box" and be creative and persistent in following their dreams. The best part is, the story is so entertaining that the messages are there and absorbed in a very fun way! I purchased this book for a young relative and will be purchasing several more -- this makes a perfect Easter or birthday gift!

Just imagine two things you like best of all things in the world. Put those two things together and what do you have? Well this is what darling little pigtail girl did. She figured out what her two favorite things were and went about creating something fun. It is all in the imagination!

In this book author shows our children that with your imagination you can do great things that are not possible sometimes in real life. But who knows you might even be able to create something from your imagination for real. It has been done before. The illustrations along with the story are bold and bigger than life in fun colors that would inspire any child's creative imagination.

So many children are not encouraged to use their imagination. They are even disciplined and accused of not telling the truth. Let your children use their imagination! I use to encouraged my young grandchildren to make up a story to tell at bedtime or when trying to have a quiet time. They have great imaginations and I loved their stories. Who know your child could become an Author someday.

I highly recommend this book.
