Not really a Kindle Book

I think of myself as an technology savvy individual, so when my computer science class had this book I bought it in the Kindle edition. It was still $165.00 which seemed very steep, but I enjoy reading on my iPad via the Kindle app, so thought his would be a good fit.

However it really should be described as a PDF of the textbook, not a Kindle ebook. The text size cannot be changed, since it is essentially just a picture of the page. That means that on a retina iPad it is still difficult to read the page without zooming in, and eye strain and frustration sets in quickly.

The only positive has been that you can search the text, however even that works fairly slowly due to the size of the file.

I would recommend you buy the paper version of the book until this publisher figures out how to implement an e-textbook correctly. Or make it a heck of a lot cheaper in the Kindle version.

Excellent General Overview of the IT Industry as of 1/06.

I have never left a review on Amazon before (I've been a customer since 1997) and had no intention of doing so, when I initially searched this book description for some unrelated information.

However, after reading the previous two reviews related to this book I now feel compelled to give my review. Neither of the previous reviews had anything even remotely substantive regarding the actual material in the book. The only pertinent information the previous two reviewers touched upon concerned a typo. I challenge anyone to show me a 700+ page textbook that doesn't contain at least one typo.

The rest of the review pertains to the reviewer trying to grind an axe with regard to US programmers (which I am not). Maybe if he actually read the book, he would've left a different review. The other review is concerning a vendor/shipping issue.

I give this book 5 stars because I feel it is a good general overview source concerning the Information Technology industry at the time of this posting (1/06).

This book is well written and laid out in a very systematical and logical format, which allows the reader to reference the book "ala carte" style. If I want a refresher on networking or databases relating to the corporate world from a managerial perspective, this is a great source.

If you are looking to learn the latest version of Oracle or become certified in Linux, then I suggest looking elsewhere.

Not sufficient for the DANTES MIS test

The recommended reading list for the DANTES management information systems test listed "Management Information Systems: Organization and Technology by Kenneth and Jane Laudon" current edition. [Although this particular book's title is "Management Information Systems: organization and technology in the networked Enterprise"]
This one appeared to be the latest book that Kenneth and Jane Laudon had available.
The content was okay, but not sufficient to pass the DANTES MIS test. I had to supplement my studying with the MIS book by James A. O'Brien. If you are looking for a textbook to use for passing the DANTES MIS test, use the James A. O'Brien book.
The layout of the book is VERY distracting. Not an easy read. Not smooth flowing due to the hideous layout. The book's graphics designer probably thinks it's a work of art. But then they probably only had to "look" at it, not actually TRY to read it!

For a brief period from the late 1950s to the mid-1960s, folk music captured a mass audience in the United States, as college students and others swarmed to concerts by the likes of Peter, Paul & Mary, Joan Baez, and Bob Dylan. In this comprehensive study, Ronald D. Cohen reconstructs the history of this singular cultural moment, tracing its origins to the early decades of the twentieth century. Drawing on scores of interviews and numerous manuscript collections, as well as his own extensive files, Cohen shows how a broad range of traditions--from hillbilly, gospel, blues, and sea shanties to cowboy, ethnic, and political protest music--all contributed to the genre known as folk. He documents the crucial work of John Lomax and other collectors who, with the assistance of recording companies, preserved and distributed folk music in the 1920s. During the 1930s and 1940s, the emergence of left-wing politics and the rise of the commercial music marketplace helped to stimulate wider interest in folk music. Stars emerged, such as Woody Guthrie, Leadbelly, Pete Seeger, Burl Ives, and Josh White. With the success of the Weavers and the Kingston Trio in the 1950s, the stage was set for the full-blown "folk revival" of the early 1960s. Centered in New York's Greenwich Village and sustained by a flourishing record industry, the revival spread to college campuses and communities across the country. It included a wide array of performers and a supporting cast of journalists, club owners, record company executives, political activists, managers, and organizers. By 1965 the boom had passed its peak, as rock and roll came to dominate the marketplace, but the folk revival left an enduring musical legacy in American culture.

Uneven, difficult, but worth the time

Rainbow Quest struck me as less than it purports to be; an examination of the folk music revival, which many would agree was a commercial event which began with The Kingston Trio, circa 1958, and continued into the mid-1960's until the diversification of rock music siphoned away it's popular base. Cohen's interest clearly lie in an earlier period, and most of this book covers the period from the father and son team of John and Alan Lomax, the emergence of Woody Guthrie, Pete Seeger and the Almanac Singers, to their immediate succesors, The Weavers.

Stylistically, the early chapters, covering the John Lomax period, covers broad themes; the intersection of North and South, the discovery of various cultural forms and artists, and the association between the Depression era and the songs which it produced. With the advent of Guthrie and Seeger, the book shifts its tone and becomes more of an examination of the functioning of the folk music scene, primarily in New York. The final chapters, dealing with Dylan, Baez and all of those names we know so well, is presented largely in the negative. The actual Folk Revival is presented as a series of failures with little attention given to the legacy of that period.

That said, there is a great deal to be learned from Cohen's work. All the great names of the early period are here and the major turning points are discussed. There are some oddities; Burl Ives falls in for heavy criticism for "selling out", despite the fact that one of the primary themes of Rainbow Quest is the constant tension in the folk world between "authenticity" and public success. It can be difficult at times to read through accounts of meetings of various folk publishing endeavors. There are glimpses, only, of the labor turmoil which set the backdrop for much of the music of the Thirties, Forties and early Fifties, and no little examination of why folk music might be regarded as a threat to society. Nor is the economic upswing of the late Fifties through the mid-Sixties, much discussed. Economic security removed much of the threat from folk music, which made the music more appealing to the middle classes. When rock music became about the personal experience, something Dylan pioneered, folk became too safe for the emerging generation. Folk rock is mentioned as having happened, but there is little more than that.

If what your are looking for is a discussion of popular folk music of the 1960's, Cohen's book is likely to disappoint. If you accept the book on its own terms, however, you can come away with a better understanding of a particular set of threads in the story of the early development of the national folk music scene.

troubled roots, vexing ambiguities, lasting legacy

In this, the first serious, comprehensive, and scholarly booklength history of the American folk revival (or at least one of them; one can argue that a kind of folk revival is occurring right now), Ronald D. Cohen draws on years of research to document a fascinating cultural moment. If you're interested in the subject, you will definitely want this book, and you will be grateful for its wealth of information. Even those of us who have followed the folk revival for a long time will learn a great deal. I expect to return to the book again and again in search of facts not readily, or at all, available elsewhere.
This, however, is not the sort of revisionist history that one day somebody will write. That becomes apparent on the dedication page, where Cohen honors "Pete Seeger, who has sustained me over the last five decades." If, like me and the counter-hagiographical historians certain to write the next draft of revival history, you consider Seeger something of a sanctimonious hypocrite, you may find Cohen a trifle irksome. On the other hand, you'll find validation in Seeger quotes that Cohen innocently drops, such as an astounding statement about Josef Stalin on page 30. Made in 1993 -- 40 years after the death of a tyrant who killed more people, including Communists, than any other figure in history (between 20 and 40 million, according to best estimates) -- Seeger, a lifelong, self-identified Communist, finally manages what at first looks like a critical assessment, even an apology for his years of service to a spectacularly unworthy cause. On second and further readings, however, Seeger's meaning grows ever murkier and finally takes on positively Orwellian dimensions. For all his public persona as a radical liberal, whatever personal virtues he undoubtedly possesses notwithstanding, Seeger is in his ideological heart radically illiberal. Nothing in this book will convince any attentive reader otherwise.
Cohen himself has nothing unfavorable to say about the Old Left/Popular Front culture that saw traditional music as a useful agitprop tool and proceeded to purge it of all "unprogressive" elements, fashioning a crude caricature of the real stuff. To Cohen the enemies are the anti-Communists -- he appears to make no distinction between liberal anti-Stalinists and demagogic reactionaries like Joe McCarthy and his ilk -- and phrases such as "dark clouds of anticommunism" hover over the text.
He rightly condemns the abominable, anti-democratic practice of blacklisting, which sidelined, for a time, the careers of Seeger and the Weavers. Such victimization, however, does not make them heroes, only victims; in Stalin's Soviet Union dissident balladeers and writers went to the gulag, often never to be seen again. In America in the meantime, after the unpleasantness had passed, Seeger et al. went back to well-paying careers. All the while, they managed to compose not a single protest song about the fate of their counterparts in the unfree nations of the Soviet empire. The Seegerites, after all, were members of that generation of ideologues who, in George Orwell's wry observation, were opposed to fascism but not to totalitarianism. Even their opposition to fascism, however, was conditional. When Stalin and Hitler formed the alliance that started World War II and ended only when Hitler later turned on the USSR, Seeger and his fellow Almanac Singers were unrestrained in their opposition to American intervention against German/Soviet aggression. The conflict in Europe, their songs informed us, came about because of the sinister machinations of greedy British capitalists (the theme of the Almanacs' jaw-dropping rewrite of the traditional "Liza Jane") and therefore Britain's fate was of no concern to decent people. After Hitler attacked Stalin, of course, nobody supported intervention more fervently than these putative pacifists.
The early folk revival was at its core a political movement, and Cohen's is in good part a political book. That affects his treatment of the music, about which he utters scarcely a discouraging word. But it needs to be said that, with the exception of the magnificently gifted Woody Guthrie, the Stalinists produced a vast body of very bad music. Seeger and the Weavers trafficked in a preposterously sentimentalized portrayal not only of Soviet dictators but of ordinary Americans, prominently including union members. As a liberal Democrat who grew up in a union family, I used to entertain fantasies about banjo-smashing whenever I'd hear Seeger burbling another patronizing ditty about the workers' struggle. Seeger, the Weavers, and their comrades seemed to infantilize everything they touched. And yet....
For all their moral and musical failings, they alerted their fellow citizens to our country's (and others') rich heritage of traditional song. They played a large and honorable role in the discovery (in some cases rediscovery) of authentic rural folk artists -- no one more so than folklorist and Marxist Alan Lomax, who alone or, in his youth, with his father John Lomax found Lead Belly and Mississippi Fred McDowell, among many others, and gave them stages and careers. They started folk-music recording labels (most prominently Folkways) which afforded both rural and urban performers a voice and a new audience. Most of the urban music from those days is forgettable, some of it downright cringe-inducing, but the best of it endures. Besides such talented performers as Dave Van Ronk, the Kossoy Sisters, Fred Neil, the Dillards, the New Lost City Ramblers, and Ramblin' Jack Elliott (all, with the exception of the anti-Stalinist socialist Van Ronk, at least artistically apolitical), the second stage of the revival produced one of the towering figures in American music, Bob Dylan -- about whom, oddly, Cohen has relatively little to say. Yet, in going electric at the 1965 Newport Folk Festival, Dylan both revitalized folk music and freed the revival from the suffocating effects of the Stalinist culture that made it possible. Today's folk musicians are better for it, and so is their music.

Zorrilla, Mazón, Ferrández, Garrigós, Daniel, and Trujillo have done a great job in compiling a book that fills the gap in the related bibliography with an interesting and comprehensive coverage of the challenges that we face for linking business intelligence and the Web. The book contains a mixture of research insights, system architectures, discussion of tools, and real-world cases and organizes the discussion of these issues in two areas of coverage. First, the book covers the area of exploitation of data that are already present in the Web for the purposes of business intelligence. The book discusses topics like the management of unstructured text and its combination with super-structured environments like data warehouses and OLAP tools, as well as the management of relevance, freshness, and in general, quality of the Web data with a view to its exploitation via business intelligence tools. The second area involves the automation of data processing and the usage of the Web as a platform for business intelligence including topics like BI-as-a-service, mashups and the Semantic Web for business intelligence, and, collaborative business intelligence. The book mainly acts as a reference for the state of the art in several areas, including problems and challenges that are not straightforward to be addressed as well as suggestions for paths to follow. The book's primary target is breadth of coverage, with suggestions of the relevant readings for further probing and initial insights for solutions, rather than an in-depth investigation of technical problems in the typical research-oriented fashion. In this sense, the text is easy to follow without losing its interest or significance. In my opinion, the book's primary audience is the interested researcher or practitioner who wants to get a broader view of the environment around the combination of Web and business intelligence, with pointers to the state of the art, as well as the broader challenges that remain open.

About the Author

Marta Elena Zorrilla Pantaleón is an Assistant Professor in Computer Science at the University of Cantabria (Spain). She earned her Bachelor's degree in Telecommunication Engineering and PhD in Computer Science at the University of Cantabria in 1994 and 2001, respectively. She has participated in and managed more than 20 research projects, most of them with companies and she is author of a database book and more than 40 works published in international journals, books and conferences. She is an active reviewer of several international journals and conferences (DSS, IJCSA, IEEE-Education, IEEE-RITA, SCI, BEWEB, etc.). Her research interests are the design and development of Information Systems and intelligent systems for companies and, inside the educational area, the application of data mining techniques and OLAP technologies in order to analyse and improve Web-based learning sites.

Jose-Norberto Mazón is Assistant Professor at the Department of Software and Computing Systems in the University of Alicante (Spain). He obtained his Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of Alicante (Spain) within the Lucentia Research Group. He has published several papers about data warehouses and requirement engineering in national and international workshops and conferences, (such as DAWAK, ER, DOLAP, BNCOD, JISBD and so on) and in several journals such as Decision Support Systems (DSS), SIGMOD Record or Data and Knowledge Engineering (DKE). He has also been co-organizer of the International Workshop on Business Intelligence and the Web (BEWEB 2010) and the International Workshop on The Web and Requirements Engineering (WeRE 2010). Óscar Ferrández is a postdoctoral researcher in the BioMedical Informatics department at the University of Utah (USA). He got his Ph.D in Computational Linguistics at the University of Alicante (Spain) within the Natural Language Processing and Information Systems research group. He has publications in international journals (such as Information Sciences, Data and Knowledge Engineering and Information Processing and Management) as well as communications in relevant conferences and workshops related to his research field. He has been involved in several national and European research projects together with other international research institutions. He is an active member and reviewer of several international journals and conferences. His research interests are focused on human system interaction; ontologies and Semantic Web; machine learning; knowledge discovering; and natural language processing and its application to clinical records.

Irene Garrigós is an Assistant Professor and post-doc researcher at the University of Alicante, (Spain), from which she holds a PhD and a Master's in Computer Science. She has published several papers in national and international workshops, conferences and journals (such as ICWE, ER, WISE, APWEB, JISBD, Information and Software Technologies, Journal of Web Engineering and so on). Dr. Garrigós has served as a Program Committee member of several workshops and conferences such as ER, JISBD, WISM, MDA, FPUML, UWA and has served as assistant referee in several international conferences such as WWW and ICWE. She has done research stays in Belgium (Vrije Universiteit Brussel) and the Netherlands (Technische Universiteit Eindhoven). Her research interests are: Web engineering, personalization, model driven development, requirement engineering, Web and business intelligence and adaptive systems.

Cultivating Inner Balance and Spiritual Empowerment

The Master Key: Qigong Secrets for Vitality, Love, and Wisdom is beautifully written.

Through the first five chapters, Robert describes his journey, meeting his teacher Xiao Yao when he was 8 years old, and practicing 2 - 4 hours a day, first martial arts, and then qigong for healing, while cultivating inner balance and developing spiritual awareness.

In the course of his training, he says that he learned hundreds of Qigong practices, and in this book he shares several foundational practices. Through the following 11 chapters, Robert guides you to the process of awakening qi power, using a sword finger, creating a qi ball, empowering three dantiens (lower, middle, and upper), balancing the three dantiens, empowering the central meridian, lotus meditation, and connecting universe exercise.

The qigong exercises are illustrated, and there are links to brief videos at SoundsTrue website. While these videos are helpful, they seem to be designed more to give you a preview of what you may expect from the DVDs you can get to get more out of the exercises.

Having also purchased the Master Key videos through the SoundsTrue website, just as this book, they are truly professionally created. Robert has a resonant, hypnotic voice and through the video he radiates calm, balanced energy and both the videos and this book are at the same time informative, instructional and enjoyable.

The slant of qigong practice presented in this book is primarily on creating inner balance, and becoming spiritually centered in the process, and then transforming inner imbalances and fostering healing through manipulation of energy, as well as through spiritual awareness.

Robert has dedicated a good chunk of this book to the cultivation of spiritual awareness, and here he shares a simple practice for experiencing Awakened Awareness.

Through the last three chapters, Robert shares guidelines for practicing the exercises; explores how energetic imbalances affect relationships and intimacy, and how you can create a healthier, more balanced relationships by first cultivating inner balance; and has a chapter on the evolution of the self-aware universe.

The practices involving the balancing and empowerment of three dantiens and the central meridian are called the Four Golden Wheels, and the practices presented in this book are summed up by Xiao Yao:

"Awaken the Four Golden Wheels. Become wiser, more loving, and more capable of taking action in the face of the unknown. Remain centered, balanced, and in a state of open flow. When the four wheels are turning smoothly, you find yourself in the right place, at the right time, doing the right thing, with the right people. A clearing appears before you. Life changing book

The deep humility, authenticity, and spiritual power in this book is equalled only, in my experience, in books by Eckhart Tolle. Peng tells his riveting life story in the first part of the book, and then provides wisdom, exercises, and meditations of qigong. I read the book recently when it was published by a small company, and now Sounds True has republished the book. What strikes me most about Robert Peng is the living current of the Tao that flows through his words, and through his movements in his DVD's. He is clearly deeply united with the One Life, the Tao. I learned about Peng from psychiatrists Dr. Patricia Gerbarg and Dr. Richard Brown, who are two people I have great respect for.

Extraordinary book by an Extraordinary Qi Gong Master

This is the same book as the previously published Qi Gong Master which I read two years ago. The first half of the book is Robert's autobiography and the second half contains qi gong exercises. I have the good fortune to have taken over a dozen classes with Robert as well as a week-long retreat with him in Costa Rica and I can say that Robert is without a doubt one of the top Qi Gong teachers in the world today. His knowledge, skills and wisdom are matched by his humility and sincere dedication to his students. The chapter on the 100 day water fast is so fascinating that I have read it over and over. He describes experiences that I have not come across anywhere else. This is a great book for anyone who wants to read about a genuine Qi gong master and to start practicing Qi gong.

About the Author

The Cowherds are an international collective of scholars in Buddhist Studies. They worked together first on Moonshadows: Conventional Truth in Buddhist Philosophy, an investigation in Madhyamaka epistemology. They are united by a commitment to rigorous philosophical analysis as an approach to understanding Buddhist metaphysics and epistemology, and to the union of philology and philosophy in the service of greater understanding of the Buddhist tradition and its insights.

Adds reason to faith founded in reason

The Cowherds collective provides a series of essays about ethics in Buddhist Madyamaka philosophy, especially that advocated by Shantideva. This is often deep formal analysis, with numerous references to Western philosophical positions by author. Not a light read at all, but that's the point. It's for those who want to feel more confident that Madyamaka morality is logically grounded. It will increase the "reason" level in one's "faith grounded in reason" for wisdom loving practitioners. Though formal, the warmth and "care" underlying the intellectual approach shines through. As in other essay collections which many of these contributors are involved it is worth the effort whether you are a Buddhist interested in philosophy, or vice versa.
