3rd night in a row......when do i get some sleep???

it is amazing that i am still with this story.....(5th book in the series i have now read in 3 days!!!) ....i am quite discerning in what i read and do not suffer installment scifi well, having grown up on one volume books and usually am very weary of the nowadays so common 3 to umpteen volume storylines, often for the sake of maximizing financial returns......i am also usually not one to be much intersted in fantasy aspects of scifi, but the perfect blend of scifi and fantasy has been achieved in this series of books, doing both genres an invaluable service and entertaining and making one wish to be part of the storyline at the same time.....not just as an outside observer reading.....if you read one series of books this year, or the next 20.......make it this one.....i am already dreading the moment when i am done and the arduous task before me then of having to find some new story to equal this.....it will not be easy...but then again, as is Her way ( insider joke to those who have read some of these books already).....i shall endure....

The author has talent

I have read the entire series of books for "In Her Name" that is available for the Kindle. Every book got better than the one before. The books just flowed to read them and I could not put them down until I was finished. I enjoyed the story line and the technology described in the books. The battles were well thought out and the characters were interesting. The unique mental link the Kreelans have within their race and the technological level of their empire form interesting scenarios in the story. The entire series is worth reading, I believe you will enjoy it if you are a fan of Sci-Fi.

I like this author's work so much that I have just brought his newest book to read, "Season Of The Harvest". I hope it is just as good!

An Odd Plot Device

I've just finished the entire Last War Trilogy and this review will address all three. I am conflicted in selecting the rating, because I found a lot to like in the series, but one big item which troubled me.
First the good: I found the plot and characters - both human and Kreelan - well developed. The classic plot of a human encounter with a truly alien race is nicely developed and presents a fresh approach - the aliens are far advanced technologically and antagonistic to the humans, yet choose to meet them on relatively equal footing. For the most part the military SF aspects are sound and well presented, both space and ground based. Hicks has done a great job presenting the Kreelans as deadly and vicious, yet somehow not coming across as monsters. The human characters and relationships are believable and interesting. Taken as a whole this is great space opera and good military sf.
Here is my problem: I thought the story was solid, but the magical qualities attributed to the priestesses in the plot served as a distraction to me. I found myself absorbed in the story's development when suddenly one of the priestesses would walk through concrete or transport herself across space with a thought, and I would lose focus.
I understand that science fantasy is a popular and growing element of SF; I read some myself and enjoy it. I just don't expect to find it woven into an otherwise solid SF saga. This trilogy could have been a 5-star read for me without the magic. I still liked it a lot, and will read more from this author. I just found the presence of the magic jarring.

Very Valuable Resource Book

I bought this book at the original price but it has paid for itself. Gray coverage is a very tricky thing and as my clientele has gotten older, I need to know everything I can about gray coverage. Professional classes are quite expensive and the info gleaned can fade over time. When I have questions, I pull out this book (I keep it at work) and invariably my question is answered. I recommend it highly to anyone who is looking for a way to service the growing baby boomer clientele. It is a valuable resource book.

AMAZING!

I don't even know where to start...this book is amazing! Really AMAZING! I could not put the book down when I started reading. I've learned so many new tricks of the trade. David Velasco wrote this in simple terms so that you can understand every step. He tells you what to do, why to do it that way, and what to do for a color correction.
This book has help me set the foundation of understanding haircolor. Because this book helped me so much I did end up buying all of his other books and I'd have to say they are all GREAT! If you don't have all the confidence in doing haircolor I recommend you get all his books. I wish they would've given me these books when I was in school, it would've saved so much heartache.

If you have Grey haired clients.....

You must have this grey coverage book. It is the only way you will get a successful color accomplished on grey hair. Dave shares the tips ands tricks to get full coverage each and every time. After being a colorist for over 25 years, there are things that even I was never taught, and struggled with... Until Dave's books brought it back to reality in easy to understand and easy to follow techniques that are foolproof. You will not go wrong with this one if you have grey haired clients....

Get a whiff of this one

I will forever be grateful to Patrick Suesskind for this book. It made me realize how important odor is for me.
I cannot think of anybody else who wrote so extensively and knowingly about the importance of our ability to smell. It is a very original and unique book.
It made me realize that I chose my lovers with my nose. I also realize that I cannot stand some people because of their scent. Not that they stink, I just do not like their particular body odor. Since I read this book - and I read it many times and also saw the movie several times, I planted my garden with lots of fragrant plants. I bought many new perfumes and I stop so much more often to smell the roses.
I prepare food which will not only appeal to my taste buds and eyes but also to my nose.
I also love the book because of its historical content. Suesskind transports us in a Paris and France that gives us a whiff of the stench, which many who could afford it, covered up with perfume. His description of his main character possessed with his mission to create the best perfume in the world is absolutely fascinating and I could not put the book down.

H. JONATHAN CHAO, PhD, earned his doctorate at The Ohio State University. He was co-founder and Chief Technical Officer of Coree Networks Inc., building a terabit IP/MPLS switch router. Between 1985 and 1992 he was a member of technical staff at Telcordia in New Jersey. He is a Fellow of the IEEE and has published widely in the above subjects.
CHEUK H. LAM, PhD, earned his doctorate at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. He is a member of the technical staff at Lucent Technologies Inc., Landover, Maryland.
EIJI OKI, PhD, earned his doctorate at Keio University, Yokohama, Japan. He is a research engineer at NTT Network Service Systems Laboratories, Tokyo. In 2000 he was a visiting scholar at Polytechnic University.

Well Done, But Left Me Feeling Ugly Inside...

This review has given me a lot of trouble. I've had a tremendous amount of difficulty putting my feelings about this book on paper because the feelings are so complicated. I really hated this book in so many ways. It left me feeling ugly inside, and I think I sat in my bed for about 20 minutes, hand over my mouth, in shock at how it all ended. This book does not contain an ounce of good feeling in it. Everything about it made me feel uncomfortable and really, really sad. The thing about that is that that was exactly how I was supposed to feel. This book is raw, and graphic. It gets right down to the nitty gritty of the effect bullying can have on a young person. Some people come out on the other side of it, others don't, but nobody comes away unscathed. The title is absolutely fitting, because it left me feeling just that, empty...

Dell's story is not unique. Young people face the kinds of abuse Dell faced in Empty every day, most of the time, silently, or worse, like Dell, with a mask of humor to hide their hurt. Nothing about Dell's, life was easy. Yes, much of it was of her own doing, but too much of it wasn't, and it was heartbreaking. I felt sick to my stomach much of the time I was reading this book because Dell didn't just FEEL like she had nobody looking out for her; She really didn't. She was alone in the world, and dealing with more hurt and ridicule than any one person should ever have to. Dell never even got her "moment" to show everyone her value as a human being. Even that was robbed from her. This book was so truthful and eye-opening, and REAL. I can't even. Sometimes there aren't happy endings. Sometimes people don't ever find joy in their lives. It is sad, but so heartbreakingly true. All this being said, I absolutely hated this book. Yes, it needed to be written, and yes, I think K.M. Walton did an absolutely stellar job writing it, but I can't get past how it made me feel. It cut me deeply, and I can't forgive it for that. If you like gripping, gritty, heart-wrenching reads (and I often do- Ellen Hopkins is a personal favorite), then you will probably want to read this, but I can't say that you will enjoy it. If I could go back in time, would I spend the time reading it again? Absolutely. But I still wouldn't like it.

Grade Level Recommendation This book is for high school age readers and up. It is graphic in many ways. There is a lot of language, sex, sexual assault, drinking, drug use, and other mature subjects. That said, I think this should be REQUIRED reading for HS students, just not before.

Just had to tell the author what i thought after i read this one, thought i'd share the email with you...

Hey K.M,

I've been meaning to email you since the weekend when I read Empty pretty much straight through!!!
Well I had to put it down just before the end because I was staying at a friend's place in QLD and was so engrossed that I was being quite unsociable! Then finished it the next arvo as soon as I got on the plane.
I really enjoyed it, I expected it to be good and insightful into the lives and struggles of teenagers because Cracked delivered that beforehand, but I was still pleasantly surprised by the depth of Dell's journey. I knew I'd want to read it but I didn't expect to be quite so involved and completely hooked. I was throughout.

During it I made my second mistake. I assumed the ending would be a feel good. I arrogantly decided that if it was aimed at a young adult audience it would do the usual and lead them by the hand to a happy place and leave them entertained but not necessarily challenged. All wrapped up neat as a bow. Silly me. I was watching the stack of pages I hadn't read get thinner and thinner and wondering how you were going to turn this all around in such a short space and then bam, it ended and I was hanging. Doh! I was so surprised, I was like What? Where's the rest? Then I started thinking about it and couldn't stop, imagining what could happen from there and what I wanted to happen, thought should happen if the world was fair and right. Wondered why it was so important to me and how it applied to those in my life.

Several days later I find myself still thinking about Dell and I just LOVE your ending!! I am so impressed (not that I should have been surprised) that you give the readers the credit for intelligence enough to draw their own conclusions and think with their own minds. It's brilliant! Not only do you NOT spoon feed them, you force them to consider themselves in the story and where and how they could have made a difference. You are not lecturing them or sugar coating, but so successfully making them responsible. For themselves and the lives around them. Genius.

I wanted to thank you for that. As anyone who's ever gotten lost in a book would say, it's a gift to become involved, and share in a story with not only the characters but also the author and you gave us that.
I certainly recommend this to everyone and I think this should be compulsory reading on every school curriculum.

I gave it 3 stars, but I really do recommend this contemporary.

Dell is fat and depressed. Her father abandoned her family leaving them practically destitute in exchange for a young, dumb, newer-model wife. Dell's best friend Cara is attempting to break into the popular crowd and that leaves Dell feeling abandoned and unloved. Dell's mother is addicted to pills and a bitch. The only positive thing in Dell's life is her baby sister, whom she loves dearly.

The first thing that struck me about Empty was Dell's character. Dell does not let us forget that she's overweight. In the beginning of the novel, it seemed like every other sentence Dell narrated involved her feeling fat. I understand what it's like to be fat and how overwhelming and depressed that can make you feel, but in Dell's case, it seemed so over the top. I wanted to have genuine feelings of sympathy for her, but she made that a little difficult in the beginning.

But in Dell's defense, her life does kind of suck. Her family is falling about and when her best friend Cara starts abandoning her, things go from bad to worse, especially when they attend a party together with the popular crowd. It was after that that I really began to have sympathy for Dell. I just wanted her to find some happiness... and maybe a psychologist. Dell's love for her sister also made her a much more likable character. They way she described how sweet her baby sister was, new baby smell at all, it was very touching. I would love to see a sequel to Empty which focuses on Dell's sister when she becomes a teenager. Give Empty a read and I think you'll agree that would be very interesting.

The ending. I'm not going to give it away even though I'm probably the only person in the world who will read this book and totally not see it coming. I did not see it coming at all. Dell completely surprised me and even though I felt little emotion about her from the beginning, I did have a good cry at the end of this novel. That surprised me... maybe I felt a little for Dell after all.

Three stars. Empty started out a little off to me, but got better as I kept reading. This book is far from horrible and for the most part I did enjoy it. If you're a fan of depressing contemporaries (I know you are, who didn't love TFIOS?) I recommend you give this one a read. It's a very fast, easy read that might just surprise you.

"I have made the decision to adopt this text for my Fall, 2011 class. The reasons are as follows: 1) the information is comprehensive and applicable to today's market environment. I feel the students will benefit from the materials, and be able to apply the knowledge to their select professions. 2) the visual layout of the text is attractive and is presented in a way that encourages greater curiosity of the subject matter. In honesty, too many textbooks, while rich in context, is often dry in presentation losing the readers' attention. This textbook does an effective job of relaying the necessary information while keeping the reader's attention, and 3) I like the book's Case and Role Play scenarios. These exercises allow the student to flex their skills and knowledge on the chapter's contents, giving them a deeper understanding of the issues."

About the Author
Thomas N. Ingram (Ph.D., Georgia State University) is professor of marketing and FirstBank Professor of Business Administrations at Colorado State University. Before commencing his academic career, he worked in sales, product management, and sales management with Exxon and Mobil. Tom is a recipient of the Marketing Educator of the Year award given by Sales and Marketing Executives International (SMEI). He was honored as the first recipient of the Mu Kappa Tau National Marketing Honor Society recognition award for Outstanding Scholarly Contributions to the Sales Discipline. The University Sales Center Alliance has designated Professor Ingram as a Distinguished Sales Educator for his long-term contributions to sales education. Tom has served as the editor of the Journal of Personal Selling & Sales Management, chair of the SMEI Accreditation Institute, and as a member of the Board of Directors of SMEI. He is the former editor of the JOURNAL OF MARKETING THEORY & PRACTICE. Tom's primary research is in personal selling and sales management. His work has appeared in the JOURNAL OF MARKETING, JOURNAL OF MARKETING RESEARCH, JOURNAL OF PERSONAL SELLING & SALES MANAGEMENT, and the JOURNAL OF THE ACADEMY OF MARKETING SCIENCE, among others. Raymond W. (Buddy) LaForge is the Brown-Forman Professor of Marketing at the University of Louisville. Buddy received the Outstanding Sales Scholar Award from Mu Kappa Tau at the National Conference in Sales Management and a Special Recognition Award from the American Marketing Association Sales Interest Group in 2005. He was selected as one of the Top Thirteen Faculty Favorites at the University of Louisville and received a Distinguished Scholar Award from the Research Symposium on Marketing and Entrepreneurship in 2006; the Distinguished Sales Educator Award from the University Sales Center Alliance and the Undergraduate Teaching Award from the College of Business in 2007; and the Outstanding Faculty Award from Beta Alpha Psi and a Faculty Favorite Award from the REACH Ambassadors in 2008. The Sales Program at the University of Louisville has been selected as a Top University Sales Education Program by the University Sales Education Foundation from 2007-2009.

Ramon A. Avila (Ph.D., Virginia Tech University) is the George and Frances Ball Distinguished Professor of Marketing at Ball State University. Before coming to Ball State, he worked in sales with the Burroughs Corporation. He has held two visiting professorships at the University of Hawaii and another at the Kelley School of Business at Indiana University. Dr. Avila was awarded the 2009 University Sales Center Alliance Distinguished Sales Educator. In 2003, Avila earned Ball State's Outstanding Faculty Award. In April 2002, he received a Leavey Award. This award was given for innovation in the classroom with his advanced selling class. Avila was presented the 1999 Mu Kappa Tau's Outstanding Contributor to the Sales Profession. He is only the third recipient of this award. He has also received the University's Outstanding Service award, the University's Outstanding Junior Faculty award, the College of Business Professor of the Year, and the Dean's Teaching award every year since its inception in 1987. Avila also sits on five editorial review boards. His primary research is in personal selling and sales management. His work has appeared in the JOURNAL OF MARKETING RESEARCH, JOURNAL OF PERSONAL SELLING & SALES MANAGEMENT, THE JOURNAL OF MANAGEMENT, INDUSTRIAL MARKETING MANAGEMENT, THE MARKETING MANAGEMENT JOURNAL, and the JOURNAL OF MARKETING THEORY & PRACTICE, among others. Charles H. Schwepker, Jr. (Ph.D., University of Memphis), is the Mike and Patti Davidson Distinguished Marketing Professor at the University of Central Missouri. He has experience in wholesale and retail sales. His primary research interests are in sales management, personal selling, and marketing ethics. Dr. Schwepker's articles have been published in the JOURNAL OF THE ACADEMY OF MARKETING SCIENCE, JOURNAL OF BUSINESS RESEARCH, JOURNAL OF PUBLIC POLICY AND MARKETING, JOURNAL OF PERSONAL SELLING & SALES MANAGEMENT, JOURNAL OF SERVICE RESEARCH, and JOURNAL OF BUSINESS ETHICS, among other journals; various national and regional proceedings; and books, including MARKETING COMMUNICATIONS CLASSICS and ENVIRONMENTAL MARKETING. Michael R. Williams (Ph.D., Oklahoma State University) is professor of marketing and director of the Academy of Customer Excellence and Sales at Oklahoma City University. Prior to his academic career, Williams established a successful 30-plus year career in industrial sales, market research, and sales management and continues to consult and work with a wide range of business organizations. CourseMate, Easy to Follow

This is the fourth class where I have had to purchase a CourseMate product. I like these books and I don't sell them. To me, CourseMate doesn't add a lot of garbage to their textbooks or keep repeating things. It's always easy, insightful reading with helpful tools and I normally read all of the chapters. I wish more instructors would use these books.

High on Information, Low on Hype

This is one of the better sales books I have read. Many sales books are packed with fluff and provide little that can be applied in a concrete way. This is common in sales training workshops too. This is the information I've been looking for to really provide our sales team with tools and information that can be applied. I'm taking a professional sales course right now from Dr. Ingram while concurrently reading this text and the information is worth its weight in gold.
