From the Author
I've been electronically modifying my cars for a very long time - and this books reflect some of that passion.

The thing with making electronic car modifications is that many people think it's a closed book - that you have to be a computer scientist or electronic engineer to make any changes.

But that's just not the case - I am neither, and yet I've modified systems as diverse as electronic stability control, engine management, all-wheel drive torque split control systems... and many more.

So you don't need to be an electronics engineer to modify car electronics - but I do think you need to have a basic understanding of circuits, relays, resistors, potentiometers and the like.

That's why this book starts with the absolute basics - looking at very simple circuits. I then move onto to different signal types - analog and digital - and how to measure and modify these signals.  

As far as I am aware, there's not another book on the market that takes this approach - starting from scratch and then developing straightforward techniques that can be used to modify the most complex of car systems.

(And of course there are also some areas that this book does not explore - cracking software and making changes at that level, for example.)

If you currently make lots of mechanical modifications to your car but the electronics side of things is unknown to you, this book will help you understand what you can do - and how to do it.

About the Author
Julian Edgar started his working life freelancing for photography magazines. He then worked as a secondary school teacher for eight years, teaching humanities, before leaving teaching and becoming a full-time automotive writer.

He edited a national Australian automotive print magazine before becoming editor of AutoSpeed, an online car magazine. Along the way he wrote extensively for Silicon Chip, an electronics hobbyist magazine, while contributing articles to publications in Australia, the UK and the US.

He has owned cars with two, three, four, five, six and eight cylinder engines; diesel, petrol and hybrid petrol/electric drivelines; front-wheel drive, rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive configurations; and cars with single turbos, twin turbos and superchargers.

He has been electronically modifying his cars for about 25 years, usually by very cheap and effective means. Over that time he has modified engine management systems, engine cooling systems, turbo boost controls, electric power steering systems, auto transmission controls, all-wheel drive torque split controls, stability controls, hybrid car regenerative braking controls, and lighting and sound systems.

Interesting and informative

I've enjoyed reading this book. The author has some interesting ideas and seems to be very knowledgeable. Nice quality printing and color illustrations. I will buy his other books. I'm interested in car electronics and have a basic level of knowledge. I may not do many of the projects in this book but it is good information and is motivating.

Excellent rigging foundation book.

This is a great book. I've been rigging for 10+ years and have read almost every rigging book out there (including Body Language, (just ok)). This is the best book I've read for rigging beginners. I am reviewing the rigging section specifically. The way this book differs from all the rest is that it's structured like a class which is incredibly valuable. Key concepts are introduced clearly and concisely at first and then we proceed to a step by step tutorial applying the concepts to a character you are rigging throughout the book. Foundation level rigging know-how is introduced in a very clear and methodical fashion. Basic rigging concepts that beginners need but most lack. The book has excellent and clear screenshots, superior printing quality, flowcharts, illustrations, it's well written and has color coded pages. It would function well as an instructor guide as well as a self contained course. The student work and anecdotes are a great touch. I'm sorry but based on this book I think Cheryl (I don't know her) knows what she is doing as both as an educator and as a rigger. Good attention to detail and a patient easygoing style of writing. I felt compelled to write this after reading the "riddled with flaws" review which is inaccurate and seems to carry a hint of personal animosity. This is a great book and I've finally been able to recommend a book about learning to rig to my coworkers and friends who always ask. This one. Encore!

This book is great if you are just starting out in rigging. It has step by step instructions and pictures to go along with them. I have used this book for all of my rigs! It is definitely worth reading.

Great Rigging, Not so Great Character Modeling

I've purchased this book for a class that I'm taking at school. I'm currently on the last chapter, and feel comfortable to give a full review.

PROS:
-Great step by step tutorials for each milestone
-Gets you in a good habit of saving different versions while you work so you can go back easily if you make a mistake
-Pictures help to show where you go in the menu system
-Creates a very clean system that makes it easy for someone else to animate if needed

CONS:
-Outdated for newer versions of Maya, and there are some corrections that need to be taken into account
-I really recommend not following their version of creating a character. Yes, it's a simple way to make one, but it is not the best for creating a character that will deform correctly, or look good for that matter.

This will definitely be a book I keep for reference. Memorizing how IK and FK works will take a little time, and this book is wonderful in explaining to you how each will work and affect different joint systems in the skeleton. I highly recommend it!

In this well-researched history of heart transplants, surgeon Cooper shares his interviews with more than 60 sources, including his former colleague, Christiaan Bernard, who performed the first human heart transplant. Cooper combines medical facts with personal facts about himself and the cowboys of the field, letting readers in on what these larger-than-life doctors did in and out of the operating room. Much of Cooper’s first-person account is tabloid worthy. For example, he tells about the tax-evasion trial of Clarence Walton Lillehei, who designed prosthetic valves and an external, battery-powered pacemaker. The prosecution called 164 witnesses who talked about how the surgeon claimed parties, gifts to girlfriends, and a call girl as deductible expenses. Spicy tales give way in some sections to overly technical passages, but overall this is a fascinating account of the colorful men who pioneered what is now a common surgical procedure. --Karen Springen

About the Author
David K.C. Cooper, MD, PhD, FRCS, is a heart transplant surgeon and researcher. He completed his medical education at the University of London, then trained in general surgery and heart surgery in the U.K. with periods of research at Harvard, Cambridge, and London. In the late 1970s, he was a member of the team that performed the first successful series of heart transplants in the U.K. In 1980, Dr. Cooper was appointed to the faculty of the University of Cape Town Medical School in South Africa, where he had responsibility for the heart transplant program under Prof. Christiaan Barnard. In 1987 he moved to Oklahoma City, where he continued his work in heart transplantation and research, and later accepted a research appointment at Harvard Medical School. During this time, he began meeting the pioneer surgeons who make up the personalities profiled in his book, Open Heart. Dr. Cooper has published almost 500 medical and scientific papers and chapters, and has edited or co-edited six major textbooks. He holds three doctorate degrees, and is a fellow of both the Royal College of Surgeons of England and the American College of Surgeons. He is now director of a research group at the Thomas E. Starzl Transplantation Institute at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, where he also is a professor of surgery.

An Exciting Read

This is a splendid volume, partly because it's written from a distinct vantage point: David Cooper a cardiac surgeon. It's an enjoyable read that gives a spicy account of the evolution of the specialty of cardiac surgeon by a man who was personally acquainted with many of the major players in this exciting saga.

It's organized chronologically. Chapter one leads off with an 1896 quote from New York physician B. F. Sher¬man, "The road to the heart is only 2 or 3 cm in a direct line, but it has taken 2400 years to travel it." In thirteen more chapters Cooper traces the meandering path of the specialty by con¬centrating on the lives and accomplishments of the 33 men and one woman (Helen Taussig) who contributed to the development of this ever-expanding field.

Cooper writes for a mixed audience - laymen and those trained scientifically, including physicians - and his text will appeal to both. Having almost become a cardiac surgeon myself, I was familiar with the facts of many of the milestones of the field. Cooper presents them well, including closure of a patent ductus (by Robert Gross in Boston in 1938); development of the heart lung machine (by John Gibbon, Jr. in 1953); the use of hypothermia (both the total body concept of Wilfred Bigelow in 1952 and the 1957 cardiac saline slush method of Norman Shumway); the first cardiac transplant (by Christian Barnard in 1967) and the implanting of the first artificial heart (by Denton Cooley in 1969). These and many other accounts of significant historical events are related in a readable, limpid style, a pleasant blend of biography and scientific synopsis.

But there is an additional, sparkling facet to Cooper's writing that enhances its appeal: he is a masterful interviewer. Over a period of twenty years, Cooper conversed with most of the men who were major players in this saga, or spoke with those who had trained under them. His account is full of interesting and amusing anecdotes. He includes three dozen black-and-white photographs of the various pioneers, and he supplements the snapshots with memorable verbal sketches of them, gleaned from the interviews.

Cooper asked most of those he interviewed several revealing questions. Did they get the recognition they deserved? (Most felt they had.) How did these early pioneers - whose very sick patients often did not survive - deal with death when many of their patients died as new techniques were being perfected? Belying the myth of the heartless, calloused surgeon, most experienced a dark night of the soul if they lost patients. But they persevered, and mortality rates fell as they gained ex¬perience. Cooper comments (pg 406): "Making errors of judgment, facing death on the operating table and agonizing over whether you have performed a surgical procedure adequately can all be very painful forms of `hell' to the surgeon. The lesson that heart surgeons quickly learn is, as Winston Churchill said, `If you are going through hell, keep going.' Heart surgery is not a career for someone who lacks courage, persistence, and tenacity."

The text is also pep¬pered with spicy, revealing comments. For example: Surgeon Norm Shumway attended a banquet celebrating the career of Minneapolis surgeon C. Walton Lillehei - who early on persevered in spite of the death of many of his sick patients, and whose high-flying and chaotic life style led to an investigation by the IRS. Shumway likened Lillehei to Al Capone, saying: "He killed a lot or people, but the government could only get him on unpaid taxes."

The 430 page text is supplemented by a selected bibliography and a comprehensive index. Those who read Open Heart will come away with a new appreciation of the sterling accomplishments and varied personalities of those who developed and made commonplace this once verboten branch of surgery. At $19.43 from Amazon, it's worth buying.

This book is marvelous, an insider's view by a cardiothoracic surgeon of the geniuses who created and developed his field. There are interviews with the notables, biographic sketches and commentaries on these extraordinary doctors. The demigods were also human. The pictures and graphics explain it all for even the layman. You learn about courage, failings and the right stuff.

It is certainly a book that is worth reading and I found the contents extremely engaging even although I am not a physician. It is an interesting account of innovative men that pioneered the field of heart surgery and transposed me into the depths of a discipline outside of my own. The book is easily readable by the layman, very entertaining and I highly recommend 'the radical surgeon' by David Cooper.

It Gave me a New Appreciation for TR

Anyone who enjoyed Stephen Ambrose's Undaunted Courage or any other tale of exploration and hardship will love River of Doubt. Candice Millard's new book chronicles the expedition of Theodore Roosevelt and his Brazilian co-commander, Candido Mariano da Silva Rondon, down one of Amazon's last unexplored tributaries in 1914-the River of Doubt. The 400-mile river trip tested every ounce of the ex-president's intellect, courage, and physical stamina. Millard's book, therefore, is more a tale of survival than adventure.

Roosevelt and his American companions were woefully unprepared for their journey. They brought boats too large to be of use on a shallow river, and had to rely instead on Indian-made dugouts-canoes designed more for local transportation on flat water than long-distanced descents through rapids. The American and Brazilain members of the group often had to portage these heavy, waterlogged boats around rapids, which cost the group both time and precious food supplies.

Food proved to be one of the most vexing problems of the journey. Much of the canned food shipped from the United States was too heavy to be carried to the expedition's launching point in the Brazilian highlands, and had to be discarded. Instead, Roosevelt hoped to augment his increasingly meager rations with game shot along the way. Unfortunately, the rain forest did not offer much bounty and the group ended up eating monkeys and piranhas to survive-creatures far more difficult to kill than deer and antelope.

If that were not enough, disease plagued the expedition at every corner. Kermit, the son of President Roosevelt, fought malaria for most of the trip and Theodore almost died when he contracted a deadly bacterial infection from a small flesh wound. Author Candice Millard does an excellent job of describing the numerous hazards confronted by the group without getting too bogged down in rain forest ecology. The book's moderate length and circumscribed subject matter make it much easier to plow through than a typical biography. With that being said, some historians may be disappointed that the book does not shed much more light on Roosevelt's political philosophies or his quest to preserve public land. Was Roosevelt an early environmentalist or simply an avid hunter and adventurer? This book does not answer that question.

It does, however, show us a side of Theodore Roosevelt's character often lacking in traditional biographies of the man: his humanity. The author describes how the ex-president shared in the work, dangers, and hardships of the journey. In one scene, she shows Roosevelt washing the clothes of his companions and in another, the sick ex-president giving away his rations to one of the expedition's "more productive" Brazilian laborers. In short, readers will walk away from this book with new-found appreciation for President Roosevelt and his undaunted courage-something often lacking in today's breed of politicians.

Fascinating

When I saw River of Doubt it struck me as a fascinating story and I immediately put in my order with Amazon. As I waited for it to arrive, I began to worry that I might have been too impulsive. Afterall, a fascinating story can be as limp as milk toast in the hands of a mediocre writer. I wondered if the author would bring Roosevelt's Amazon journey to life without adding so many extraneous details about Roosevelt himself that the real adventure was lost. Or, on the other hand, not supplying enough details about the central characters to allow me to understood the true context in which the adventure occurred.

After I got the book and started to read, all of my concerns were put aside. Completely. I know next to nothing about T. Roosevelt. Millard gave me what I needed to know to understand why he would take such a dangerous trip, at such a late age, in the first place.

She was equally masterful with all the other participants (many fascinating characters in their own right). I think Millard was near perfect in giving the background of people and why they ended up on this diasterous adventure while keeping the story moving at a fascinating and absorbing clip. One really gets a sense of how people were feeling when they started with what they thought would be a casual adventure and found themselves descending into one of Earth's strangest hells. It's a spellbinding story delivered by a very competent writer and researcher.

I've always enjoyed true stories of the Amazon River. Miller's River of Doubt is fascinating, informing, and gripping and stands with the best of them.

My Great Great Grandfather's Story

This is a fascinating account of Theodore Roosevelt's expedition through the Brazilian wilderness in The River of Doubt. This book was especially interesting for me as my great great grandfather is Candido Mariano da Silva Rondon, the co-commander of the Roosevelt-Rondon Scientific expedition which put the Rio de Duvida, later renamed the Rio Roosevelt, on the map.

The author is a former writer and editor for National Geographic magazine and brings that adventurous spirit and knowledge into her writing. She did extensive research for the book into not only the history of the region but also the biology. But this information isn't just tossed into the book for the sake of trivia. Instead she weaves each piece of info into the story. For example, she discusses Roosevelt's foreign policy specifically as it relates to South America while, in the story, Roosevelt's ship is steaming toward Brazil. At other points she discusses fish as large as sharks in order to explain the type of psychological pressures the men were up against as they went along their journey. Also, when helpful for the story, she details relevant biographical information for the purpose of character development.

The story reads like a fiction novel though it is a well-documented and footnoted true story. The suspense involved makes it a page-turner that you don't want to put down. All in all, she fits a broad range of biography, history, and biology into a fascinating true story that reads like a suspense fiction. If you are into to nature, adventure travel, history, or even just quality books, this is the one for you.

I didn't know much about my great great grandfather, Rondon for short, until I read the book. Today he is national icon in Brazil. Kind of like a Lewis & Clark type of figure. He explored and surveyed more of the Amazon than anyone before him had and probably more than anyone since. To quote Millard about his life after the expedition,

"He was hounded by photographers and journalists, invited to meet the president of Brazil, asked to run for political office (an opportunity he repeatedly declined), and promoted first to brigadier general and then, near the end of his life, to marshal. In the 1920s, after meeting Rondon on a trip to Brazil, Albert Einstein nominated him for the Nobel Peace Prize, and, in 1956, the Brazilian government renamed a territory of ninety-four thousand square miles -- nearly twice the size of England -- Rondonia in his honor."

But what stands out most to me, and this quality is referenced in the above quote by his nomination for the Nobel Peace Prize, is his work with the Amazon Indians. He was the first westerner to make contact with dozens of tribes. So isolated were some of them that these River dwelling people had never even conceived of the concept of a boat, nearly 2000 years after the time of Jesus' calmed the seas from one! Rondon had a love for the Indians who were treated as no more than objects by most of the westerners entering the territory.

A large part of his legacy is the founding of the National Indian Protection service, or FUNAI, in Brazil. His mission: peace. The difficulty: these Indians were not peaceful. He appeared to be a bit of a pacifist, but not at all out of cowardice. Rather it was on principle. About the Author

Charles Bukowski is one of America’s best-known contemporary writers of poetry and prose and, many would claim, its most influential and imitated poet. He was born in 1920 in Andernach, Germany, to an American soldier father and a German mother, and brought to the United States at the age of two. He was raised in Los Angeles and lived there for over fifty years. He died in San Pedro, California, on March 9, 1994, at the age of seventy-three, shortly after completing his last novel, Pulp.

Better condition than described or expected!!

I bought this as a birthday gift for my daughter in law as this is her favorite poet. I have to admit, that after it arrived I had to sneak a peak & see what all her hype was about. I may have to order another one for me. The book was described as being in good condition but when I received it you would have sworn it was brand new. The book was perfect & my daughter in law loved it! I would highly recommend not only this product, but the seller as well.

Bukowski is an amazing poet. Sure, he was a womanizer, gambled, and drank too much but still brilliant. This is one of my favorite collections by him and it's something I go back to read frequently.
