Murder on the Menu is a light and easy read with a little bit of romances and a lot of sleuthing! I loved a good cozy mystery now and again and this book certainly quenched my need for it. Zanna Mackenzie clearly has a knack for writing this type of book because she left me intrigued in the beginning and needing more in the end! I truly loved this book and I cannot wait to see where the characters take us in the next book. This series is going to the top of my Cozy Mysteries MUST READ list!

In terms of the characters, I have to say that I really adored Lizzy. She is the perfect female sleuth. While she does find herself in a heap of trouble, Lizzy is clearly a smart character, she’s not overly emotional, and she is quite fun to sleuth with. I enjoyed Jack to in this book. He added a bit of edge to the book and complimented Lizzies character in a great way!

Overall, if you enjoy a good cozy mystery then you should try this one out. After all, it is FREE on kindle unlimited and a TON of fun!

Overall Rating: 4.5 Stars

It was fun to follow the sleuthing to find the real murderer!
By Kathleen Fields
This is the second of Zanna's books I've read and I really did enjoy it. Jack & Lizzie's relationship seemed real and it was fun to follow them in their sleuthing to find the real murderer before Lizzie ended up in jail. Of course there's a happy ending, just not the one that you're expecting and I think you'll like this one as much as I did. I was given a free copy of the book in exchange for an honest review and hope that it's helpful for both the author and the reader.

I am not very good with reviews but here it goes. I loved this book. I borrowed it under the kindle unlimited but I purchased this about halfway before I was done. Loved the main character, Lizzie, and all of the others. It was a mystery with romance thrown in. Light and easy read. Can't wait for the next one.

Finally a Great JavaScript Book
By Craig
WARNING this a really long review, because I talk about my history with head first books and how I view the authors, but the short version is that the book is great and if you have not bought it yet, then you should drop everything your doing and buy this book.

I can still remember the first time that I ever heard the words HTML, CSS and JavaScript. It was when Jon Rubinstein was taking about how easy it was to make a webOS app during an interview. When I heard that it was easy I decided that I should teach myself how to write this so called HTML, CSS and JavaScript. After failing to successfully teach myself HTML and CSS from the tutorials online I thought about buying a book, so I did some research online and found that several people recommended the book "Head First HTML with CSS & XHTML". I fell in love with this book, it was so clear and easy to understand. It not only explained things in a way that a complete beginner could understand, but it also empowered you by showing you how to create web pages that actually looked good, while reinforcing the concepts they showed you by repeating them in the book and having you do exercises at the end of each chapter, also the "there are no dumb questions" sections in the book seemed to always be the questions that I was asking (it was like they were reading my mind). After I finished the book I felt like I could take on anything (which is a pretty awesome feeling). So I thought no problem I'll just learn JavaScript now, by buying the Head First JavaScript book and going through it like I did with the "HTML with CSS & XHTML" book, but as soon as I started to read that terrible book, my hopes of becoming a JavaScript Guru were shattered. The book would say things like "this is similar to a Java class" (obviously I am going off of memory here, because I cannot force myself to go through that book again), which was confusing to someone who did not even know what Java was. I could go into a rant about why I did not like the old JavaScript book, but the short version is that I had to buy the book "JavaScript a Beginners Guide" and read that before I could finish reading the old JavaScript book because I got stuck reading it all of the time and would just spend hours not knowing what to do. When I finished the old book I still did not consider myself to be good at JavaScript and did not feel comfortable writing it or reading it, which is why I decided to go to college. At college I have learned a lot of things in the world of programming like Java and Object Oriented Design, Networking etc.. but I have never lost the desire to learn JavaScript. This is why I was so excited when I heard that Eric Freeman and Elisabeth Robson were writing a JavaScript book. They are such skilled writers, because they have the ability to approach writing a book from the perspective of a beginner. So I went on their website wickedlysmart.com and signed up for they're early access program. Since I am in college and I have to write Java programs every week I was not able to contribute to their book, but I was able to find time to read the chapters as they wrote them, and I can say that I was really happy with what I saw.

First off, let me say that I know a lot more about programming now then I did when I read the first JavaScript book (the one I didn't like). When I read the old book, I had never heard of an object before and I was confused by simple things like while loops and for loops. However when I read the chapters of this book I tried to imagine that I still did not know anything, because I believe that programming books should be written with beginners in mind. There are a thousand crash course books out there for programmers who are moving to JavaScript from another language and just want to know the language specifics. So now that I wasted enough time rambling let me get into the review. The most important thing that I was looking for in this book was that the book try to make things simple for beginners, which it did. The authors stepped through all of important programming concepts like loops, if statements, and objects from the beginning explaining everything as they went though. This book also did a great job of covering really important concepts like functions. The authors also empowered the reader by having them create some really awesome things like a functional battleship game! Lastly the book was just written in a style that is unique to the authors. I have read other head first books (some of which I really liked) and I can always tell the difference between the books written by other authors and the books that were written by Eric Freeman and Elisabeth Robson. If you do not believe me I dare you to read the old book and then read the new one. It is like night and day.

In the end I would say that this is the first JavaScript book that I have ever really liked. I have read some that I thought were ok, and obviously I have read some that I just flat out hated, but this is the first one I loved. If you are a beginner and you need a good JavaScript book to get you creating some awesome web pages then this is the book for you. It is the book that I wish I had when I was learning this stuff for the first time.

One last note is that if you just got done reading the head first HTML and CSS book, then this book is basically a must have. Wouldn't you want to learn JavaScript from the same people who just taught you HTML and CSS? Its basically a no-brainer.

You'll learn a tremendous amount
By bf5man
I must say that I was part of the Insider program and read the book while it was being written.

At first, I thought I would only learn the Javascript basics. I was wrong, this book is an unstoppable learning train.

It takes you on board and builds steam while teaching you the basics. Next thing you know, you are programming a nice Battleship game. You'll then learn the fundamentals of Objects and Functions... just the fundamental? Not at all, that's when the book gets unstoppable, you'll dig deeper than any other beginner JS books I've read on objects and functions, in fact, First Class Functions and Prototype won't have any secrets for you and that's where the book shines. In the end, you'll look back and have a hard time believing how much distance you've covered.

One last word: the creativity and thoughtfulness of the authors makes it my favorite Head First book!

Enlightening
By Kapunahele Wong
Is it strange to say that a Javascript book has a great ending? Well, this one did. I'm not one of the people who was asked to do a review. I just bought a hardcopy and actually read every word on every page for my own use - just a regular web developer looking to deepen my understanding.

My skill level:
I've been studying Javascript for a couple of years and have used it a lot at my new job in the last 6 months. Sometimes I inherit projects that have pre-existing Javascript that is sometimes pretty complex. We also use some frameworks and libraries like jQuery, Express, nodeJS, and AngularJS. So, I got this book to understand all those things better.

About the Book:
The book itself is steady and clear with a variety of projects and written in a friendly tone. It starts from zero, so if you know nothing, you're in the right place. If, like me, you've been working in it and have wondered what some of the parts do at a fundamental level but haven't had a chance to get to the bottom of it, this book will probably cover it. Even though it covers the basic stuff, it also gets into advanced topics. In fact, the last three chapters are worth the cost of the book alone. The chapter on prototypal inheritance upped my game in one evening. No kidding.

My Experience with the Book:
It's over 600 pages but flows pretty quickly considering the topic. If like me, you've been working with Javascript, you might find the first 400 pages or so to be a refresher and zoom through. After about pg. 400, I started running into more bits of info and concepts that really clarified some things. That's where I really started getting grateful that they'd done all this hard work. As I went through this book, I was also going through the 12 hour series "Crockford on Javascript" at the same time. He gets pretty in depth in some of it and on a spooky number of occasions I'd just learned a concept the night before in this book that Crockford would then discuss. Much to my delight I understood everything he went into where I know I would have missed things had I not had this book in my back pocket.

My Full Assessment:
Just get the book. It's great - every page. Work your way through it and then watch the 'Crockford on Javascript' series (free on YouTube) and you'll prove to yourself just how cool you are. Then go get that dev job. They don't use dollar signs in programming languages for nothing. :)

A Significant Contribution to the Field
By A Customer
People interested in European Medieval martial arts have to realize that these systems were kept secret at the time. Medieval manuscripts on fencing were written for a very select audience and are brief, deliberately obscure, and cryptic. It requires a great deal of effort and dedicated study to try to reconstruct personal combat techniques from period sources with any hope of success. Paul Wagner & Stephen Hand have done an excellent job in that regard with their book. Royal Armouries MS I.33 is the oldest illustrated fencing manual in existence and is devoted exclusively to a single weapon system: the arming sword and buckler. Wagner & Hand have studied all the available period sources on this weapon system and combined that with a lot of hands-on trial and error to come up with a complete and plausible interpretation of the system.
The strength of the book from a scholar's view point is the clarity with which they explain what is not being said in the original manuscript. For example, MS I.33 contains no references to footwork. I appreciate authors who do not blurr the line between their own inventions and those techniques clearly grounded in the source. (Readers interested in the source will want Dr. Jeffrey Forgeng's translation and facsimile of the original manuscript titled: The Medieval Art of Swordsmanship.)
The strength of the book from a practitioner's view point is the clarity of the text and photographs. It is a simple matter to work your way through the material following their explanations and illustrations. Given the limited source material, it is only natural that there will be disagreements on interpretation. Mine comes from Wagner & Hand's reliance on 16th-century Italian rapier and dagger sources for their footwork. Admittedly, MS I.33 provides no guidance in this area, but I find 16th-century Italian footwork so distinctive, even compared to other 16th-century styles, that I have reservations about its applicability here.
MS I.33 is an historically important fencing manual and Wagner & Hand have done the European Medieval martial arts community a service by providing a complete and rigorous interpretation. The quality of the presentation reflects their effort and dedication. This book deserves a place on any bookshelf devoted to the subject.

Not to be underestimated!
By Andrew D. Leitch
Wagner & Hand's interpretation is spot-on in a number of very unexpected ways and although its becoming a bit dated now, its still clearly the best companion book for understanding the I.33 manuscript.

The flaws in the book centre around the interpretation of the footwork. Even they admit that they didn't get the footwork right and published an addendum in SPADA II to correct this. The problem with interpreting the footwork lies in the lack of direction given by the manuscript and the tendency of whoever reads the manuscript to connect it to their own martial arts backgrounds.

I thought that they missed the mark with the footwork because in nearly all their pictures Hand and Wagner have upright stances which lock them into stepping instead of springing - like one does in Olympic Fencing. The typically low stance of Olympic Fencing gives one a lot of spring, and I found that adopting a nearly linear, forward learning stance - as is found in the I.33 illustrations also gives the same thing (a lot of spring). Which is curious because this stance can also be found in the sword & buckler illustrations in the much later fechtbuch by Jorg Wilhalm (whose work they point to on pages 25 & 100 of their book). The fact that two fechtbuch so seperated in time and yet have the same stance should have attracted more of their attention, I feel. If anything, Talhoffer's stance for sword and buckler is more in keeping with what they eventually adopted.

The book also seemed to lack a chapter on "counter-timing" - surely one of the most important principles underlying the art - in particular the "stepping through" and the "shield knock" maneuvers.

But here I am demonstrating my own prejudices. My own perception stems from an assumption that the initial engagement range of a fight is two steps apart - as both fencers agree to negotiate the intervening distance through feint and maneuver in the game of zufechten. Such a style naturally develops the process of feint and counter-time. But Hand & Wagner's interpretation seems to be in keeping with another style. The "wait and see" style of fencer, who perceives fighting distance as one step away by either party. So you stay where you are, allow your opponent to approach, parry his first attack and only then maneuver to take advantage of their newly exposed openings in his defence.

So the question is, what kind of fencer are you? Is this a book which suits your style, or will you have to re-examine their footwork?

It's a useful book for educational purposes but it's a decade old ...
By Greg Henrikson
It's a useful book for educational purposes but it's a decade old now and much of this interpretation has since been changed. Wagner and Hand, like many doing I.33 a few years ago, approach it from the perspective of better known, later fighting arts. So anyone familiar with longsword will notice similar footwork and concepts. Their stance is upright and they are quite conservative in using the buckler. Since then most students of this art, including I believe these authors, have been fleshing out the gaps between the panels of the I.33 sketches more accurately. So instead of the upright-posture, side-stepping style of early longsword, we're seeing a much more forward-leaning and dynamic approach that uses the buckler to control the center line and relies on sword rotation for strikes. If anything the buckler has now become the primary "weapon" in I.33, with the sword playing a secondary role rotating around it. The literature for the newer interpretations is still a work in progress, but Roland's work is probably the best one to check out now. Nevertheless I find this book an interesting companion piece in the way it shows how the HEMA interpretation has evolved in the past few years. Just remember not to get too attached to doing things this way, or indeed any one way. Issues as basic as which foot should be forward for various I.33 guards are still being vigorously debated.

Integral Outsiders: The American Colony in Mexico City, 1876D1911 (Latin American Silhouettes), by William Schell Jr.

In this original and compelling book book, William Schell Jr. examines the largest foreign colony in Mexico during the reign of Porfirio D'az, from 1876 to 1911. Expatriate Americans constituted the greatest number of technicians, technocrats, consultants, engineers, agronomists, mining specialists, railroad experts, and venture capitalists in Mexico. The influence of these 'integral outsiders' extended far beyond economics and Porfirian efforts to manage the booming era of Mexican modernization. Marriages between Americans and Mexican society women and membership in such organizations as Masonic brotherhoods brought the foreigners into the most important social circles.

Integral Outsiders: The American Colony in Mexico City, 1876D1911, contains a colorful history of the Porfiriato through the lens of American participation, including carefully wrought descriptions of expatriate Americans. These individual biographies make the narrative more human and interesting, allowing Schell to move beyond the simplistic view of weak, greedy Mexican elites conspiring with powerful, greedy foreign capitalists to amass great wealth while impoverishing the Mexican masses and creating economic underdevelopment.

Basing his comments on meticulous research, Schell points out that U.S. influence was hardly a one-way street and that the interaction between U.S. citizens and Mexicans was a complex system of cultural negotiations. He demonstrates convincingly that, while insinuating themselves into Mexican society, Americans thought that they were changing Mexico, and, in so doing, changed themselves. As Schell states, 'Ultimately, then, it may be said that the Porfirian regime got the form of hegemony it sought, and Washington took the sort of hegemony it could get.'

Review
In seven pithy, well-structured chapters, Professor Schell has given us an insightful vision of Porfirian Mexico's political economy and its workings from a hitherto neglected perspective―that of its economically dynamic American colony. The author's firm grasp of the Mexican business milieu in the Dìaz era (1876–1911) leads the reader through Mexico City's 'belle Ă©poque.' (J. LeĂłn Helguera, Vanderbilt University)

Through painstaking research Professor Schell has produced a provocative and insightful book that is essential reading for scholars interested in Mexico and U.S. foreign relations. (John Mason Hart, University of Houston)

William Schell's long-awaited account of the American colony in Mexico around the turn of the twentieth century is a singularly impressive achievement. Exhaustively researched and written with gusto, Integral Outsiders is certain to provoke Mexicanist and foreign relations historians and delight aficionados of Mexico. The author's sure grasp of both political economy and the latest trends in cultural analysis enables him to challenge a host of conventional wisdoms about imperialism, nationalism, and cross-cultural encounters in Mexico and Latin America. (Gilbert M. Joseph, Yale University)

there are very good pieces that could be extracted from the book
By SniffNY
This is most helpful for IT governance leaders at about Level 2 out of 5 in maturity (choose a framework) that is aspiring to be a solid Level 3 and some of 4. It is helpful since it pulls together information that is available from so many sources and can help set priorities about what to do next. While it says that it is applicable to executives, there are very good pieces that could be extracted from the book; not sure I would give the book to my company board or senior leadership team though.

Great material, now we just need a map to get to it.
By T Anderson
There are some books that must have a high quality index in order to make the book worth using. There is a ton of great information in this book, but the way it is laid out, you need to be able to move from one part of the book to another part of the book to find relevant information on different topics. Without any index at all this book is greatly crippled.

It is a good cover to cover read and you will learn a lot but that is not the strength of this book. I came back to Amazon to see if there is an e-book available that I can use when I need to find out where topics are inside the book. It currently is not being offered as an e-book. Right now unless I want to read through the book from cover to cover it is pretty much useless to me.

I need to look up a lot of information on compliance and regulations, security and architecture, and process implementation. There is a lot of great information on these topics scattered throughout the book but without a map to get to them they're completely worthless to me.

This book is going on the shelf until they come out with an e-book that I can use to look up the topics that I need to find quickly, or they decide to publish an index that we can buy to make the book usable. One other thought is that an index is a key component to making a book usable, if the authors, which wrote about what it takes to make an enterprise architecture usable missed that, what may they have possibly missed in their material that may make it fall completely apart.

‘All of [the stories] are told with an assured, masterly confidence that should please anyone who misses seeing a new Ray Bradbury collection on the shelf at the library.” (Newsday)

“Gaiman calls the stories a “hodgepodge,” with no real interweaving theme throughout. But each of the stories and poems celebrates a different aspect of storytelling that has informed the author’s life.” (NPR)

“The short stories in this collection are shocking, disturbing, funny, insightful ... Trigger Warning offers a good introduction to the works of Neil Gaiman, or a delightful addition to the collection of someone who has been following him for a long time. If you’re a fan, don’t miss this one.” (Oklahoma City Oklahoman)

“There is something for every type of Gaiman fan here, and those new to his work will find this to be a solid introduction to the type of stories he crafts: lyrical, literary, sometimes quite chilling, and always strange and provocative. ...This is a book to savor and enjoy.” (Bookreporter.com)

More things in heaven and earth, Horatio.
By EA Solinas
The mind of Neil Gaiman is a fertile place of gods, monsters, aliens, magic lingering in ordinary places and a sense that the world is a much wilder, stranger place than we think it is.

And all those things come up in "Trigger Warning: Short Fictions and Disturbances," Gaiman's third collection of his short stories and poems -- while these stories can be as different from each other as humanly possible (an ode to David Bowie, a few twisted fairy tales, a historical story about a Scottish dwarf with revenge on his mind), they share a sense of magic and cosmic wonderment, misting through his elegant, versatile prose.

Among the tales here:
* "Black Dog," a story set a few years after "American Gods." Shadow is wandering through England on his way back to the US, when he meets a kindly couple who allow him to stay in their home. But the specter of a faerie dog brings death, mystery, and an ancient magic that could be fatal even to an American god...
* A Scottish dwarf asks a former reaver to help him find a certain cave, supposedly filled with magical gold. As the two men journey to the Misty Isle, the dwarf gradually reveals his true reason for being there.
* A haunting look at the old age of Sherlock Holmes, reflecting on the decay of the British empire and solving one final mystery.
* A timid young artist hears that his first teenage girlfriend has been in contact with some of the people he knows... and the problem is, he made her up.
* Jemima Glorfindel Petula Ramsey's questionnaire, and exactly what happened to her fake-tan-loving sister Nerys. Hint: it involves floating, glowing, claims of godhood and dark chocolate.
* A year's worth of mini-stories, involving ghosts, pirates, genies, preteen soldiers, vicious ducks, a brazier, a homeless kid, a mysterious string of bizarre deliveries, disagreeing parents, igloos made of books, Australian fires and what they create, and a magical ring that keeps coming back.
* A handful of poems, about chairs, landladies, Saint Columba, a witch who "hid her life in a box made of dirt," and the evil fairy from "Sleeping Beauty."
* A flea market seller who has a strange story of time travel, interdimensional rooms, ancient empires, tiny statuettes and a boy named Farfal The Unfortunate.
* Obediah Polkinghorn, the Uninventor, who has the ability to alter reality so that certain inventions (flying cars, jetpacks, the Wispamuzak) never come into existence, and what he does when he finished uninventing forever.
* "Nothing O'Clock," a Dr. Who fanfic (does it count as a fanfic if it's professionally published, and is by a man who has written actual episodes?), where the Doctor and Amy arrive on Earth... only to discover that it is devoid of humans, after being officially sold to the Kin. How to fix it? Go back to when it was first sold by an unwitting family!
* A pair of fairy tales retold in Gaiman's sensibilities -- an update of "Diamonds and Toads" set in a bleak, dreary urban environment, and "The Sleeper and the Spindle," a sort of mash-up of "Snow White" and "Sleeping Beauty," starring a queen who decides to rescue a legendary sleeping princess with the help of her dwarf sidekicks.
* And several other stories that linger on the fringes -- a "lunar labyrinth" that grants wishes to people who successfully navigate it, a love letter, a mother lamenting her son's horrifying death at sea, a pleasantly unimpressive mother who knows of interesting "adventures," a man struggling to remember the name of a great author, a guy who learns of the madness that comes from visiting Jerusalem, a spooky little story about the terrifying Click-Clacks, and a mythic sci-fi ode to David Bowie.

Many authors are commonly called "magical," but Neil Gaiman deserves the label more than most -- he has a special knack for unpredictability that few authors can even approach. Not only can anything happen in his collections of short stories, but you have no idea what KIND of "anything" will flow from the wellspring of his mind. There's no obvious pattern, no overarching theme that might restrict his imagination.

And that is one of the best aspects of "Trigger Warning." In this collection, Gaiman deftly leaps from the macabre to the whimsical, the gloriously weird to the dramatic, the haunting to the magical. No matter how mundane the setting, he can draw back a veil and reveal something that was hidden from our eyes, whether it's dark magic ("Black Dog," "About Cassandra"), personal tragedy and drama ("Down To A Sunless Sea," "The Truth is a Cave in the Black Mountains") or just the strangeness of the world we live in which we otherwise might not notice ("Jerusalem").

And his writing is no less versatile. While every story is written in a crisp, shimmering style that is very recognizably his, he drifts around through different kinds of stories -- one is told through a questionnaire, another is an overheard monologue, and some are just conversations. What unites them is the glimmering clarity of his writing, full of beautiful similes ("His hair framed his face like a wolf-grey halo") and snappy cleverness ("And pterodactyls have been extinct for fifty million years." "If you say so, dear. Your father never really talked about it").

Neil Gaiman at his best is on display in "Trigger Warning: Short Fictions and Disturbances" -- a collage of shorter pieces, ranging from darkly enchanting novellas to magical little puffs of whimsy. There are more things in heaven and earth than are dreamt of in our philosophy, but a few of them can be found here.

Gaiman Excels at Short Fiction; Excellent Collection
By Scott Knight
I just finished reading Trigger Warning by Neil Gaiman, and once again he has hit the ball out of the park. This is another fantastic collection of short stories from one of the best story-tellers around. There is no specific theme running through the stories; however, Gaiman mentions that a "trigger warning" suggests that readers should be aware that they may encounter characters or situations that may "trigger" fear or otherwise upset them. (I didn't really see this, although several of the stories are dark, bordering on downright creepy).

While several of the stories were previously published, but they were all new to me. Among my favorites are: A Lunar Labyrinth (very creepy); The Case of Death and Honey (a terrific Sherlock Holmes story which also explains how he seems to live longer than he should); Nothing O'Clock (a Doctor Who story with the Eleventh Doctor: It seemed to perfectly capture Matt Smith's portrayal of the Doctor, and was a terrific read); and Kether to Malkuth (a bittersweet story that seems to be even deeper than it appears, and is hard to explain); and The Sleeper and the Spindle (a cool and unique retelling of the Snow White and Sleeping Beauty stories).

Gaiman is a master at his craft, and like pretty much everything else he writes, Trigger Warning is wonderful. It is immersive and sublime, hiding themes and bigger ideas in prose that is exquisite and easy to read (that should be a book blurb).

One caution - The main reason I wanted to read this book was for the story Black Dog, which closes the collection (it is a sequel to Gaiman's terrific American Gods). Unfortunately, my preview copy did not contain this story, which means I'm going to have to work to track it down.

I highly recommend Trigger Warning. Gaiman fans will love it, and the short story format provides an easy and unintimidating way to sample his works for those looking to read him for the first time.

I received a preview copy of this book from HarperCollins Publishers in exchange for an honest review.

Escapist fun from an awesome storyteller
By B. Case
Disturbances? Neil Gaiman’s newest short story collection is called “Trigger Warning: Short Fictions and Disturbances.” I just love that last word in the subtitle! It’s such a perfect word to convey the deliciously off-kilter feelings I felt when I read these stories. Even though this book has just been published, I’m already in the process of reading it a second time. I couldn’t resist. Gaiman is such an awesome storyteller and this collection really showcases his creative literary talent.

The first time I read this book, I was swept away with the pure joy of the reading experience. Of course, when the book ended, I felt a big let down. I wanted more stories. We human animals must have some innate longing for myth and fantasy; Gaiman’s stories seem to quench that longing in some essential and primal way. That’s the deep-seated urge that must draw me to his books.

I certainly don’t want to give the impression that I was overjoyed with each and every story. Isn’t it true that none of us ever love every chocolate in a box, every song in an album, or every story in a collection? Some stories are better than others, and a few I didn’t like at all, but in the balance, I was besotted…and that’s coming from a reader who doesn’t particularly like short stories in the first place. But I do love Gaiman, and reading him is all about being transport to another realm of reality, about having your normal everyday emotions disturbed (yes, here’s that word again), about being tipped off balance into a state of wonder, humor, terror, suspense, spine-tingling chills, or a delightful mixture of all of that, and more.

Every one of the stories in this collection was new to me, but as the author explained in the introduction, most have been published before. There are only three totally new stories. The remaining twenty-one were published one or more times in some other venue or media. But few people have been exposed to them there even though a few are major award winners. Most had a previous life as part of a multi-author anthology dedicated to a specific overarching theme. Five stories had a previous life in a multi-author anthology celebrating a famous author, namely: Gene Wolf, Ray Bradbury, Jack Vance, Sherlock Holmes, and Arthur C. Clarke. Two were collaborations with musical drama and performance artist Amanda Palmer. Four were published as stand-alone stories: one for a literary magazine, another for a newspaper, a third for a year-long interactive fan-based Twitter experiment, and a fourth for a BBC Radio 4 production. All are captivating and unique glimpses into the staggeringly creative mind of Neil Gaiman.

Most of the previously published stories in this book probably escaped notice by the lion’s share of Gaiman fans. In today’s world, relatively few people read short stories, especially when they’re published in obscure anthologies. By pulling together all his most recent short stories and selling them in one volume, Gaiman will be able to reach a far larger audience. When done well, short stories are the gems of the literary world. Gaiman’s short fiction deserves to be read and treasured. I rediscovered that while reading this book. I’d forgotten how marvelous short stories can be when they’re told by a master storyteller.

The collection is aimed at adults, but I’m sure Gaiman’s legions of young adult fans will love this book, too. None of the stories in this collection are appropriate for young children: this is not because they may cause nightmares, but rather because they deal with adult themes that children will not comprehend.

I loved this book. It was full of enchanting stories that delightfully disturbed my senses and inhabited my heart.
